When Janiene Hullock was in primary school one of her teachers suggested that she should become a nurse.

Her caring demeanour towards her friends at school seemed a perfect fit for such a profession.

It was a thought that stuck with the Goomeri resident into adulthood.

But when the needs of her family, as well as two horse and cattle properties became increasingly important, pursuing a career in nursing was put on the back burner.

“In 2005, I was working in a hotel services role for Queensland Health in Wondai, and took up an opportunity to take part in a TAFE course to become an enrolled nurse (EN),” she said.

“I was an EN at the Wondai Health Service for five years, but I found that I was asking so many questions that I decided I needed to know more.”

It was then that Janiene decided to fulfil a long-held wish to study to become a Registered Nurse.

She completed her training through the University of Central Queensland, part-time and online, while still working at the Wondai Health Service as an enrolled nurse.

With her training complete, Janiene was pleased to secure a position at the Murgon Hospital which is located just 10 minutes from home.

“I am so pleased to be finally finished my study and to begin work in Murgon,” she said.

“I love the thought of working in a rural hospital. It isn’t like the bigger hospitals where you are assigned to one ward. In a rural setting you don’t know who will walk through the door.

“Working in the South Burnett region was my first preference. I was glad that I was offered Murgon. It is a busy hospital and being a small town, I know a lot of the staff already.”

She is looking forward to undertaking more study and training with her next goal of becoming a diabetes educator.
