The high-flying Hornets were too strong for the Monto Roos

April 7, 2014

The first of the “northern” rounds of the 2014 South Burnett senior rugby league competition was played on Saturday, with three games played in Mundubbera and one in Wondai.

It was a mixed bag of results for the South Burnett teams.

At Wondai Sportsground, Cherbourg made light work of the Monto Roos.

The match started evenly enough with a try apiece: to Arthur Saltner, for Cherbourg, and Daniel Nancarrow, for the Roos.

But then Cherbourg took off, putting on six tries ahead of half-time while Monto scored just once (Shane Carter).

The half-time score was 40-10.

After the break, the Hornets resumed their blitz on the Roos’ line with Mark Saltner crossing twice before Monto responded.

Blake Popp dived to pluck the ball out of the air and landed between the posts, much to the delight of the Roos’ fans who had travelled down with the team. Shane Carter’s conversion took the score to 52-16.

Cherbourg put on three more tries before Monto finally earned some more possession and put on back-to-back tries – to Marty Bowman and Rhys Hawkins. Carter’s conversions narrowed the margin to 40 points, 68-28.

But Cherbourg weren’t finished for the day with Arthur Saltner scoring on the full-time siren.

With Bernard Hopkins’ conversion attempt unsuccessful, the full-time score was Cherbourg 72, Monto 28.

Cherbourg tryscorers were Arthur Saltner (2), Fred Aubrey (4), Stafford Saltner (2), Marcus Dynevor, Bernard Hopkins (2) and Mark Saltner (2). Fred Aubrey kicked 10 conversions.

Up north, Mundubbera caused an upset by defeating the Kingaroy Red Ants at the death knell, 28-22, after a closely fought game.

The Nanango Stags were also overpowered, going down to Theodore, 62-24.

In comparison, the Mustangs came home to Murgon with smiles on their faces after clocking up a century against Gayndah.

The local senior rugby league competition is now taking a break until April 26 when a triple-header will be played in Gayndah and Kingaroy is scheduled to play Monto in Murgon.

Junior rugby league will resume on May 3.
