The Kingaroy State High School’s student leaders for 2014 were officially sworn in before the school community, parents and invited guests at a special school assembly on Monday morning.

Badges were presented to Form captains from Years 8-12; to Band, Choir and Dance captains; House captains; Committee chairpersons; and Junior and Senior school captains and vice-captains.

School captains are Belinda Johnston and Daniel Welson; vice-captains are Taylor Crossley and Simon Fairbairn.

Junior school captains Jenna Christensen and Brayden Canniford; vice-captains Dayna Pukallus, Riley slatter, Briarna Reynolds and Jayde Kilgour.

Mike Barrett, from the Kingaroy RSL Club, presented Kingaroy RSL Hospitality Awards to two Year 11 and two Year 12 students studying hospitality.

The Stefan Planic Memorial Bursary – awarded in memory of a former Kingaroy Apex member – was presented by Cr Damien Tessmann to Year 12 student Jason Hanwright.

Guest speaker at the investiture was Durong grazier and Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Womens Network president Georgie Somerset.

Mrs Somerset spoke about leadership, including the South Burnett Community Leadership program which is running over two sessions at the Bunya Mountains to nurture leadership skills in the local community.

She said there were two types of leaders: the people who are elected to official places of leadership (the “big L” leaders); but just as important  was the “small L” leadership that everyone can do.

She said the Year 12s were all leaders; they would all be looked up to by other students at the school.

Mrs Somerset said Kingaroy High School’s Active Citizens program provided a great opportunity for leadership and for choosing to give “and not expect anything in return”.

She urged all the students to “be the best you can be” which would mean there would be an amazing group of individuals making up the school community.
