Most areas received an inch or so of rain over the last week, which is good for the greens.

And they should be in great form for club championships, which seem to be on the calendar this month and next at most clubs.

But while we wait for them to roll around, here’s what’s been happening in bowls this week:

* * *

Nanango news:

One of the highlights of the past week was the visit by the Burgowan Club to Nanango last Saturday. They are a great social crowd and their annual match is always something to look forward to.

Twenty Burgowan bowlers took on twenty from Nanango and there was some very keen competition

Nanango do have an advantage – they are used to grass greens while Burgowan play mostly on carpet greens.

All the same, very close score for the match: Nanango won 85 to 80 – 3 rinks to 2.

We have the losers first (or should I say Burgowan winning scores first?):

  • Joe Appolozio. Henry Bleisner and Warren Arthur 10 lost to Piggott, Kuskid and Little 23
  • Trevor George, Evelyn Jensen, Allan Carr and Ben Pratap 15 lost to Darcy, McRacken and Duggan 17
  • Bob Hammond, Heather Carr, Mike Wyvill and Jim Fowler 20 def Skennerton, Maher and Rose 16
  • Lew Saunders, Bob Hall and Athol Jensen 17 def Aub Tremlin, Tiger Pollard, Roy Tremlin and Peter Waters 12
  • Alan Ward, Greg Pogson, Sue Tucker and Brian Havell 23 def Segley, Whittaker and Bruce Johnson 12

And on Friday of last week in Scroungers, Ben Pratap had a good start to the year when he easily bounced away with honour: 134

Next best was Greg Pogson with 106.

This week, there were a couple of very hot days on Tuesday and Wednesday and some bowlers were obviously on a weight loss program.

In the Tuesday Men’s Social:

  • Trevor George and Allan Carr 19 def Bob Hall & Mike Wyvill 18
  • Bob Hammond and Ben Pratap 24 def Lew Saunders, Henry Bleisner and Glen Yeates 13

And in Wednesday’s Ladies Social, Heather Carr and Sue Tucker 18 def Muriel Benfield and Evelyn Jensen 13

Coming Events:

  • Thursday Night 3 bowl Pairs – Names in by 5:30pm for 6:00pm start
  • Friday Afternoon – Scroungers with a 3:00pm start

Yarraman news:

Yarraman kicked off the year with Thursday night bowls last week – a pairs match – where Brian Dugdell and Kerry Walsh came up trumps. They defeated Neil Johnson and Kenny Walsh 17-9.

Runners up were Margaret Willoughby and Tom Clarke who defeated Bev Profke and Marge Clerke 21-15.

Tom might be on kitchen duties for the next week after that effort!

And in Sunday Bowls, with conditions two for an end and three for a win, the winners were the wily Merv Fitch, who got off to a good start for 2014 when he teamed up with Di Currell and Kay Dugdell to defeat Brian Dugdell, Lorraine Holmes and Bev Profke 16-9, ten ends to 8.

Runners up were Kev Profke, Neil Currell and Margaret Willoughby 10 ends 21 scoring 20 points to defeat Neil Johnston, Horst Meyer and Daphne Stewart eight ends, score 23, points 20.

Big day there tomorrow: Australia Day Bowls – Club Select and a 12:30 start. So hop down and be part of the action.

There’ll also be Social Bowls with a sausage sizzle next Thursday at 5:30pm, and a week tomorrow Sunday Bowls at 12:30pm (Club Select).

Just a reminder that Wondai President’s Day is that day also.

Esk news:

During the end of year break, the green went under maintenance while the club took the opportunity to do some visiting and build up some frequent bowling points.

Members travelled to Durack, Inala, Gatton, Russell Island, Cleveland, Crows Nest, Toogoolawah and a team even went to Lowood for their pub day.

Well, reports are that the green has come back with a flourish and full credit for this must go to greenkeeper Don and his helpers Laurie, Allan and Gerit.

Anyway, the club had some social bowls on Thursday of last week to try out the green (though no scores were taken).

But the mixed social bowls last Sunday drew quite a roll up, and the winners were Frank, Allan, Terry, Vicki, Armand, Kerri-Anne and Kay.

I think the club were the real winners.

Next up the club will be visiting Crows Nest on Sunday 2nd and it’s Pub Day at Esk on Tuesday 4th.

And here’s a tip:

In the Somerset Regional Council’s Australia Day Awards Presentation some bowlers could be on the awards list (!!!)

So what’s on the calendar for the next week or so?

  • Australia Day bowls at Yarraman tomorrow – 12:30pm
  • Ladies bowls at Nanango on Wednesday
  • Night bowls on Thursday at both Nanango and Yarraman.
  • Scroungers every Friday 3:00pm in Nanango
  • Sunday 2 February – Mens President’s Day at Wondai
  • Wednesday 5 February – Yarraman Ladies AGM
  • Saturday 8 February – Yarraman versus Nanango in rotational triples (but check with your club – Yarraman’s calendar says it is at Yarraman but Nanango’s calendar says it is at Nanango)
