Christmas is in the air and lawn bowls is wrapping up another good year around the region. Here’s a run-down of what’s been happening this week:

* * *
At Yarraman:

Bowls is all wrapped up at Yarraman – and last Sunday it was nicely wrapped with Christmas decorations up and the Christmas spirit flowing at the clubhouse.

There was a Christmas bowls trophy match in the afternoon, and it was followed by the annual presentations at the Christmas dinner.

The bowls competition was one for an end and two for a win, and need I tell you who won???

Yes, I do:

  • Winners: Merv Fitch and Roy Wrembreck defeated Brian Dugdell and Ken Sheldon 32-5 – 15 ends to 3
  • Runners up: Kev Profke and Kay Dugdell defeated George Wolski and Alison Anderson 24-7 – 14 ends to 4

There was quite a run down from there…

Now let’s run through the championship winners for 2013.

Ladies first:

  • The Ladies Club champion – Doreen Fitch
  • Their B Grade singles champion – Daphne Stewart
  • Pairs: Gloria Anderson and Glenda Wolski
  • Triples: Ivy Wrembreck, Lorraine Holmes and Robyn Diercke
  • Fours: Doreen Fitch, Gloria Anderson, Glenda Wolski and Kay Dugdell

Mens Club winners:

  • Mens Club Champion – Bill Holmes with runner-up Kev Profke
  • B Grade champion – Horst Meyer
  • Pairs: Merv Fitch and John Moore
  • Triples: Merv Fitch, John Moore and Christie MacLeod
  • Fours: Brian Dugdell, Neil Johnston, Ian Mowat George Wolski

And in other awards:

  • Mixed Pairs – Brian and Kay Dugdell
  • Mixed Triples – Merv Fitch, John Moore and Daphne Stewart

It was a big year for Merv Fitch, wasn’t it?

And also a big year for Yarraman Bowls.

Proston news:

Twelve teams from the South Burnett area and visitors from Roma played in the Proston Bottle Tree Carnival last Sunday.

  • The winning team was skipped by home club member John Gleich with score: 3 wins plus 18
  • Runners up was a team from Durong with score: 2 wins plus 14

The green has been rejuvenated, so the club are now holding Social Bowls every Wednesday night from 6.30pm and on Saturday afternoons from 3:00pm.

Kilcoy news:

The Star of the Green was played last weekend, with Ernie Herbert defeating Col Ferguson.

There was plenty of barracking from the gallery – it was a closely contested battle.

The last game of the year was also held last Saturday.

Results:

  • Pauline Lawson, Bert Christie and Ian Smith defeated Jeff Welden, Lis Frawley and Col Ferguson 22 – 12
  • Dennis Thomson. John Worrall and Flora Kelly defeated Noel Lanes, Enree Herbert and Wendy Smith 16 – 9
  • Dave Scott, Nelly Herbert, Margaret Worrall and Brett Kelly defeated Michael Dunn, Kathy Hill, Allen Jamison and Terry Pratten 17 – 6

Merry Christmas to Kilcoy bowlers!

In Esk:

Last Sunday Esk bowlers went to Crow’s Nest.

Champion bowler Kelvin Kerkow was in the group, and it was a great time to catch up and get tips on bowling technique.

Last Thursday night the club held a Barefoot Bowls sausage sizzle and Scroungers.

Best scroungers were Stewart, Gerry, Kay, Ivan, Laurie and Chelsea – some very close scores!

This coming week is the club’s last week of bowls for the year, and some coming events to watch out for are:

  • Tomorrow: Christmas break up and Trophy Presentation Day. Trophies for the day sponsored by Stitt and St George and members John and Noela Blank
  • Next Tuesday: the club will be hosting a session of the Somerset Regional Council’s Active and Ageing Program as the last bowls event of the year

So…. what’s still on the calendar?

  • Big one in Goomeri tomorrow – Patron and Patroness Day, a Mixed Fours competition with two games of 18 ends. Should be a great day – ring Bevan or Hazel Sippel on (07) 4168-4212 for more details
  • Nanango is slowly winding down for Christmas, but there’ll be Mens club selected pairs on Tuesday (a midday start and last one for the year); and Night Bowls on Thursday kicking off at 5:30pm

Well that’s it for this year.

I hope you enjoyed our coverage of bowls during 2013 on Wild Horse FM 99.7 and right here on southburnett.com.au.

But can I suggest a good New Year’s Resolution for club games directors and media personnel?

It’s this: get reports to me as early in the week as possible.

Otherwise, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

My next report will be in early January 2014.
