A 20-year-old Kingaroy man has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm following an incident outside a Kingaroy hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He is scheduled to appear in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court on December 5.

At 12:25am, a 51-year-old local man was allegedly punched in the head outside the hotel, on the corner of Kingaroy and Alford streets.

A police spokesman said the altercation caused the man to fall to the ground and hit his head.

Police will allege it was a totally unprovoked assault.   The man who allegedly threw the punch left the scene on foot, but was found a short time later.

The injured man was taken to Kingaroy Hospital then airlifted in a critical condition to the Royal Brisbane Hospital where he is now in a stable condition.
