Another big week in bowls. So let’s get to it:
Darling Downs Blind Bowlers P & M Day.
Something you may not know: every Friday morning at North Toowoomba, the Darling Downs Blind Bowlers club meet.
And on Friday last week it was the Blind Bowlers P & M Day – that’s President and Members Day – hosted by sight-impaired President Thelma Muggleton of Crows Nest.
There were eight rinks and 16 teams took part.
The Queensland Blind Bowlers Association had a team and there were three teams from the Darling Downs Blind Bowlers Club, but most clubs in the district were represented, including a team from Peranga skipped by Hazel Gseidle.
Amazing really – visually impaired people doing what a lot of fit people have trouble doing: putting a bowl on the kitty.
It was a fantastic day and in fairness to all, the winners’ names were drawn out of a hat.
The Mens Triples Championship were held in Kingaroy last weekend.
Saturday Round One:
- Greg Schulz, Paul Geritz, Mark Williams. 20 def. Lester Newman, Danny Holligan, Trevor Turner 17
- Harry Read, Geoff Clutterbuck, Ray Maclaren, 20 def. Paul Marychurch, Bob Robinson, Col Kratzmann 19
In Sunday’s Semi-Finals:
- Dave Barwick, Glenn Turner, Phil Kemp 26 def. Harry Read, Geoff Clutterbuck, Ray Maclaren 14
- Greg Schulz, Paul Geritz, Mark Williams 22 def. Steve Carland, Alan Irwin, Kev Raffin 18
…and in the Final:
- Greg Schulz, Paul Geritz, Mark Williams 25 def. Dave Barwick, Glenn Turner, Phil Kemp 21
While all of this was going on, there was also a Social Triples match on Sunday too.
It was sponsored by Dave and Beryl Woods, and this very popular event attracted 42 players onto the green
Conditions of play were 6 points for a win and 1 point per end won, and the winners were Evelyn Taylor, Hugh Harrison, Paul Marychurch 20 points.
The runners-up (on a countback) were:
- Dave Woods, Steve Carland, Val Jeppesen, 19 points
- Third losers of the countback: Marj Moore, Bev Sorenson, Ray Maclaren 19 points
Thursday nights are proving popular, and the club welcomed a few new players last week.
- The winners on the night were Jan Elliott, John Masters and newcomer Bob Chapman
- Runners Up were Paul Wlazly, Lenny Smyth and another young newbie, Craig Mudd
- Consolation prize went to Marie Thompkins, Dot McVeigh and new gal Marlene Morgan
Last Saturday, in the first round of the Men’s 4’s Championships, Tyrone Richter (Skip), Harvey Hill (3rd), Dallas Richter (2nd) and Ross Tinney (Lead) played Clayton Foster (Skip), Jimmy Sowden (3rd) Mick Karraman (2nd) and Paul Wlazly (Lead).
Bit of a slow start for Clayton and his team – they weren’t much of a game of it.
At the 18th end they’d managed to climb up to being down 12-19 and it looked like they could make a match of it. But Tyrone applied the pressure and won the game 24 points to 16.
Tyrone’s Team will now meet Hartly Johnstone’s Team today to see who gets their name on the wall.
And last Sunday – a hot day – enthusiastic members played 21 ends.
The winners for the day were Karl Pfreimbtner, “The Ray Man” Byrne and Alan Johnstone.
This Sunday is the Men’s Monthly Meeting and it kicks off at 9:00am.
A couple of dates for the diary:
- Thursday 14 is the Mixed Pairs Championships match, when Tyrone Richter and Marion Dean will play Jim Sowden and Lilian Pfreimbtner. It starts at midday and should be a good match to watch.
- Tuesday 19 is Pub Day
- Thursday 21 is Ladies A Grade and B Grade Singles, and it starts at 5:00pm
Last Saturday in the hotly contested monthly State of Origin contest, Nanango took on Yarraman in Self Selected Triples, with 5 for a win and 2 for an end.
Yarraman scored bragging rights.
- Bev and Kev Profke with Helene Johnson 44pts
- Ian Strack, Warren Arthur and Delvin Powys 40pts.
- Mike Wyvill, Doris Drew and Sharron Yeates also 40pts.
- Robyn Diercke, George Wolski and Brian Dugdell 33pts.
- Di Currell, Daphne Stewart and Neil Currell 31pts.
- Lyn Halliday Sue Tucker and Brian Havell 31pts.
- Eunice Smith Jim LeCoq and Neil Johnston 25pts
Let’s stop the scoreboard there
In Tuesday’s Mens Social:
- Joe Aglizzio and Jim Fowler 37 def Henry Bleisner and Cec Bracken 13
- Lew Saunders and Ben Pratap 27 def Bob Hammond Bob Hall & Greg Pogson 14.
And on Wednesday, some of the regulars on the green for the Ladies Social saw a bit of an upset on one of the rinks when Jan McLennon, Silvia Fanning and Sue Tucker 20 def Muriel Benfield, Di McNulage and Evelyn Jensen 12.
President’s Day was held in Yarraman last Sunday, and most clubs from the Burnett District came to say “gidday” to President Brian Dugdell.
The event clashed with President’s Day at another Burnett District club – Binjour – so support for both clubs was stretched.
At Yarraman, they played two games of 18 ends with the trophy decided on points (two for an end and five for a win).
The wily Merv Fitch grabbed the honours. His team included Horst Meyeer, Ron Lucas and George Wolski, and they won with a whopping 64 points.
Next best Nev Williams, Neil Johnston, Bev Profke and Christie Macleod. Their score a very respectable 58.
The run down from there was Kingaroy, Durong, Tansey, Proston, Murgon, and Wondai.
Melbourne Cup Day in Yarraman was also a fun affair, with one for an end and two for a win.
Guess who won??
Yes, Merv Fitch again on a count-back with 13 points.
Margaret Willoughby and Yvonne Schultz were on his Tuesday team and they drew their match against Brian Dugdell. Eunice Smith and Kerry Walsh 17-all, but clinched the trophy on points
Finally, on Thursday night there were quite a few on the green playing one for an end and two for a win.
Brian Dugdell and Marge Clarke defeated Todd Currell and David Douglass 28-3 with a massive points total of 16.
And on Wednesday, it was Ladies Day, with twelve players taking to the green for social play following their monthly meeting.
