The South Burnett’s four photography clubs gathered at the Wondai Art Gallery’s Studio last week for their annual Interclub Competition to select the region’s best photographs of the year.
This year’s contest had six themes and each club was invited to submit five images for each theme, or 30 photos in total.
The competition was organised by the Murgon Camera Club. Entries were judged by Fran Cross from the Hervey Bay Photographic Club, Ken Chapman from the Gympie Camera Club, and Garry Bradford from the Glass House Mountains Camera Club.
The judges said that they were “surprised but very pleased” with the high standard of entries and said they found choosing the winners in several categories very difficult.
This year’s individual award winners were:
- Animals, Birds or Insects – Max Walters, Murgon Camera Club (“Rooster”)
- Pictorial – Max Walters, Murgon Camera Club (“Wild Horse Event – Bell”)
- People – Janette Scanlan, Murgon Camera Club (“Little Witch Girl”)
- Flora – Gordon Dean, Nanango & District Camera Club (“Banksia”)
- Emotions – Charles Taylor, Timber Towns Digital Art Association (“Separation”)
- Creative – Keren Mcsweeney, Nanango & District Camera Club (“Car”)
Max Walters also won the Champion Print and People’s Choice awards, while the Murgon Camera Club took out the Club Of The Year award with 643 points against the Nanango & District Camera Club (628 points), the Timber Towns Digital Art Association (618 points) and the Kingaroy Photographic Club (600 points).
After the presentations, each of the judges gave a short talk on different aspects of photography.
They also provided impromptu critiques of some of this year’s entries, explaining why some entries had received less points than they otherwise might because of issues related to cropping, framing, sharpness and lens flare.
Murgon Camera Club president Max Walters commended all the members of the region’s camera clubs for “a great effort” and said he hoped that more members of the public would come along to future Interclubs.
He then presented each judge with a gift bag filled with South Burnett products to thank them for their efforts before the event concluded with a multi-draw raffle.
This year’s Interclub was sponsored by The Peanut Van, Kingaroy Kitchens, Pottique, Moffatdale Ridge Wines, Crane Wines Cellar Door and B&B, Harvey Norman, the Carrollee Hotel, Good Price Pharmacy, Blooms The Chemist, the Kingaroy Photo Lab, Flamingo Wish, All Things Country, Options Gift Shop and Betta Electrical.
Next year’s competition will be hosted by the Kingaroy Photographic Club.
For the 2014 competition, three of this year’s categories will be kept and three new ones will be added.
