Steady rain on Saturday morning failed to deter keen gardeners from attending the 8th annual Wondai Spring Garden Expo.

According to the Expo’s organisers, attendance numbers were only slightly down during the morning as a light, continuous drizzle swathed the grounds.

But numbers quickly returned to normal as the day wore on and the passing storm band that brought the rain drifted north-east away from region. And on Sunday, the sun was back.

The Expo was held at the Wondai Sportsgrounds and as usual, it attracted large numbers of exhibitors displaying everything from garden plants and ornaments to solar power systems and quirky peanut sculptures.

The Wondai Lions manned a barbecue and canteen on both days to help feed hungry visitors, and several other food stands were dotted around the grounds.

Member for Callide Jeff Seeney and South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Wayne Kratzmann performed the official opening at 11:00am on Saturday, and during Saturday and Sunday several guest speakers spoke on gardening topics.

The Wondai & Districts Garden Club also organised a Garden Competition in conjunction with the event, along with a Horticultural Competition that drew a large number of entries across a wide range of categories.

Entries were displayed in the Wondai Sportsground’s Lions Pavilion on both days, with judging happening early on Saturday morning.

And when the Expo stage wasn’t being occupied by politicians or guest speakers, members of local singing group Love2Sing provided lively musical entertainment to keep spirits high.

The Wondai Spring Garden Expo is the “little brother” of the Wondai Autumn Garden Expo, which celebrated its 20th birthday in April this year.

The next Garden Expo will be held at the Wondai Sportsgrounds on April 19-20, 2014. For more details about this event, contact Fran on (07) 4168-5870 or email her
