It’s not every day that more than half a million dollars is handed out to community groups, but that’s exactly what happened on Saturday when the Heritage Community Branch Nanango distributed its 2013 Community Grants.
Representatives from 27 not-for-profit groups gathered at Ringsfield House to be presented with cheques ranging from $300 to $130,000 to further their activities.
Heritage Community Branch secretary Wendy Zerbst told the assembled crowd the Nanango branch had given away a total of $2.5 million since it opened.
She said it was very proud to be giving away half a million dollars this year to the local community.
“I don’t think that happens anywhere else in Queensland, and possibly in Australia,” she said.
Some of the groups to benefit from grants this year included the Nanango All Breeds Kennel Club which will be using its $6205 grant to develop an “earth dog-testing area”.
“The only one of these in Queensland was wiped out in the floods a few years ago so Nanango will have the only one in the State,” Ms Zerbst said.
“The club anticipates it will bring people into Nanango.”
Nanango and District Aeromodellers will be using their $8000 grant to build a “low-cost” clubhouse from two shipping containers.
SB Care, which is based in Kingaroy, was given $17,000 to purchase a new car to better service clients in the Nanango area.
The Nanango Stags rugby league football club was given almost $18,000 to build a small, covered grandstand at Fred Kassulke Oval.
The Nanango Historical Society – who hosted the grants ceremony – was given almost $47,000 to completely paint Ringsfield House inside and out, and repair and repaint the roof.
The Nanango Men’s Shed project, which is being developed on land belonging to the Baptist Church on Mt Stanley Road, was given $56,500 which will allow construction of the shed to start.
However, the big winner on the day was “Heritage Lodge”, a joint project between South Burnett CTC and the Heritage Community Branch Nanango.
Heritage Lodge is a specialised community housing project being developed jointly by CTC and Heritage.
The project received $100,000 in last year’s Heritage Community Grants and received another $130,000 this year.
