The students from St John’s Lutheran School in Kingaroy were privileged to have a visit from Mr Keith Payne VC OAM earlier this week.
The school was approached to have the distinguished visitor address the students from Year 2-7 as part of his visit to the South Burnett.
He was here primarily to be part of the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Service at Memorial Park last Sunday, organised by the district’s RSL sub-branch.
Mr Payne talked to the students about what the word “responsibility” means.
The students gave various answers about what this word means to them.
He continued to add to their comments about how we all have a responsibility to ourselves, our families and our community.
The students were amazed by the number of medals that he wore and while he didn’t share old war stories, he held their attention through his humorous approach and his interactive style.
The motto at St John’s is “Valuing Faith, Friendships, Family while focussing on Relationships, Responsibility and Results”.
His unscripted talk tied in with this familiar theme for St John’s students and this was reinforced through the points he outlined in his address.
School leaders presented Mr Payne and his wife Florence with a bunch of flowers and a small gift of appreciation for their visit to St John’s.
The school community appreciates local RSL member Mr Barry Krosch’s efforts in organising this visit to the school.
It was a privilege for the students and parents to hear from such a highly decorated veteran during his visit in the South Burnett community.
