Some of the volunteers who helped make CTC’s “Frock Up and Tie Down” day a big success

July 29, 2013

Local community agency CTC Partners in Foster Care hosted the 2013 “Frock Up and Tie Down” event recently for young people in care in the South Burnett.

The participants were pampered, taught about personal care and presentation, and decked out in fabulous outfits before being photographed as part of a personal portfolio.

A number of local businesses and community groups volunteered time and products to make the event successful.

Staff from Alicia’s Spa and Hair Worx took care of the hair, while the Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse donated make-up and beauty products.

Tina Torrens and volunteers from the South Burnett Young Leaders Association provided manicures and painted nails for the girls.

Even the boys got involved in trying on snazzy suits and having their photos taken in vintage cars which were made available for the day.

Georgia Hansen, a member of the SBYLA, was one of the volunteers.

“When I first found out about the Frock Up and Tie Down Day, I was very excited,” she said.

“It was a lovely day. Doing their nails gave me a chance to have a chat one-on-one with the young people. It was very rewarding.”

Georgia is a 16-year-old student who is studying beauty services.

Rachel Nordling-Baker, 19, also volunteered her time.

“I helped out last year and had so much fun that I had to do it again this year. I just love the look on their faces when they first see themselves in the mirror. It was a rewarding and moving experience.”

Rachel is also a member of the SBYLA.

“Like Rachel, I helped out last year doing nails and there was no way I was going to miss out on this year’s event,” SBYLA group mentor Tina Torrens  said.

“There seems to be a misconception about young people in care, but they are just like every other normal teenager. They were all polite, down-to-earth individuals.”

CTC Partners In Foster Care provides support and training to foster and kinship carers in the South Burnett.

“Having been involved in the event for the past two years, it is heart-warming to experience the generosity of local people including businesses and organisations who enthusiastically volunteer their time, resources and skills to assist young people in care to enjoy a day of pampering in preparation for a professional photo shoot,” Team Leader Tia Poutama, who was part of the Frock Up team, said.

“Feedback from the young people involved was really positive and they expressed their sincere gratitude and thanks to all involved in making this experience a day to remember. ”

The event occurs annually and is organised by the South Burnett Child Safety Service Centre to assist young people in care to gain skills and experience as part of their transition to adulthood.

Volunteers gathered at a recognition breakfast on 24 July, to receive certificates and thanks for their efforts.
