The South Burnett Saints AFL team put on another strong performance on Saturday before their home crowd in Kingaroy but in the end didn’t manage to come away with the points.
On a high after their one-point victory against Chinchilla last week, the Saints were confident going into their match against Highfields, whom they were level-pegging on the ladder.
Highfields were ahead by two goals at the first change, 5.4 (34) to 3.4 (22); and by half-time, the Lions had stretched this to three goals, 10.8 (68) to 7.8 (50).
But the game was by no means over and the Saints had a strong third quarter, clawing back Highfields’ lead, 13.11 (89) to 11.12 (78).
South Burnett powered home in the last quarter, outpointing Highfields but leaving their run a little bit too late.
The final score was 18.13 (121) to 16.16 (112).
Goal scorers for the Saints were Adam Bowater 3, Aidan Brennan 3, Dylan Bowater 2, Jordan Pressnell 2, Brad Edwards 2, Ty Snow, Daniel Clacy, Paul Pressnell and Adam Branch.
Best players were Adam Bowater, Ty Snow, Brad Edwards, Alexander Totton, Lucas Walsh and Aidan Brennan.
Next weekend, the Saints will hit the road again … taking on Dalby at the Dalby Swans Oval at 2:30pm.
Dalby will be fresh, coming off a bye this week. The young side has had an up-and-down season so far, recording some good wins and some big defeats.
On June 15, they defeated 2012 minor premiers South Toowoomba 12.10 (82) to 7.8 (50).
