The South Burnett Saints – hot on the heels of testing Premiership favourites Toowoomba in Round 8 of the Darling Downs AFL competition – this week fought back to record a gutsy one-point victory over the Chinchilla Suns.
The battle between the two newcomers to the competition was fought out at the Suns’ home ground at the Chinchilla Showgrounds on Saturday.
The Saints surged away at the start to lead 4.7 (31) to 2.1 (13) at the end of the first quarter.
Greater accuracy could have blown this lead out even further and would have prevented Chinchilla making a game of it in the windy conditions.
But at the main break, Chinchilla had taken the lead: 8.2 (50) to 5.11 (41).
The Suns went into the last quarter still in the lead, 11.5 (71) to 8.18 (66) with South Burnett clawing its way back to within a goal by a string of behinds.
The Saints finally hit their target in the last quarter, kicking four goals to Chinchilla’s three and finishing 12.20 (92) to 14.7 (91).
Goal kickers for the Saints were Adam Bowater 3, Michael Jarvis 2, Brad Edwards 2, Paul Pressnell, Aidan Brennan, Ty Snow, Joshua Miller and Lucas Walsh.
Best players were Dylan Bowater, Nathan Trace, Alexander Totton, Nathan Emmerson, Jack Lewis-Korver and Ty Snow.
The Saints’ next game is a home game against Highfields on Saturday (June 22) from 2:30pm at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy.
