A small group of well-wishers gathered at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery’s Studio on Saturday night for the official opening of what is probably the shortest-lived exhibition seen in the region this year.
The guests had come to preview Murgon artist Lee Porter’s latest series “Can You See What I See?”, which captures human-like emotions in the eyes of animals.
The exhibition went on public display at the Gallery last Saturday and Sunday so that interested locals could see it before the works are packed up and shipped to Florence, Italy, next week for a season at Gallery360.
The opening was catered for and Moffatdale Ridge Wines – one of the sponsors of Lee’s European trip – were on hand to provide wine tastings.
Lee thanked everyone for coming, explained what the exhibition was about and said she was “absolutely delighted” with the results that Murgon picture-framer Neil Smith had achieved with her artworks.
She also thanked sponsors Moffatdale Ridge Wines, southburnett.com.au, CROW-FM 90.7 and the Wondai Regional Art Gallery for supporting the arts in the region.
Cr Kathy Duff, who was unable to attend the opening night due to prior commitments, sent a letter of apology but praised Lee for being selected to display her artworks in a major European art centre.
It’s the second time Lee’s works have been exhibited overseas.
The first was in 2008 when her works were shown at New York’s Agora Gallery, the second-largest private gallery in that city.
Jason Kinsella, from Moffatdale Ridge, also spoke saying his winery would be holding a special Tuscan Feast on Sunday, June 16, to help raise funds for the costs of Lee’s trip.
The event will be held at Moffatdale Ridge from 10:00am to 3:00pm and will feature a four-course feast and live entertainment from Fortunato.
Tickets are $35 per head and can be booked by phoning the winery on (07) 4168-4797.
