Organisers of this year’s Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition are very pleased with the turnout, even though numbers were slightly down on usual.

The annual competition, which celebrated its 25th birthday on the weekend, had been postponed from its usual date of the second weekend in February because of this year’s Australia Day floods.

Unfortunately, the next date available to organisers clashed with the Kingaroy Show however a total of 260 competitors – including 60 juniors – weighed in 91 fish over the course of the two days.

Organisers said the fishing was a challenge but determined anglers weighed in some quality fish.

The best session was on Saturday morning when 45 fish were weighed in.

Jorga Keating, of Chinchilla, was this year’s Hanwood Fish Hatchery champion junior angler after weighing in a 0.620kg Yellowbelly.

Adult angler MJ Northdurft, of Bowenville, took out the Heaviest Yellowbelly at 1.085kg.

MJ won a trophy and prize money with a value of $300 that was sponsored by Erin and Peter of the Lake Boondooma Kiosk.

Adult angler Peter Manthey, of Proston, won the Wondai Accounting and Tax Services heaviest Australian Bass at 0.720kg.

Peter won a trophy and prize money with a value of $250 that was sponsored by Neil and Elizabeth Smith from Wondai Accounting and Tax Services.

Adult angler Tim Kisbee, of Nanango, took out the Wondai Hardware and Trade Centre’s heaviest Jew at 1.390kg.

The Boondooma Dam Fish Stocking and Management Association expressed their thanks to all the club’s sponsors and committed anglers who continue to make the event an outstanding success.
