Nanango’s Autumn Race Meeting had a star-studded line-up both on and off the track on Saturday.
Off the track, comedy star Magda Szubanski was the special guest judge in the Fashions Of The Field competition; Magda was visiting Nanango as part of this year’s Big Screen Film Festival.
On the track, there were strong fields in the five races.
The racing got off to a late start after Race 1’s Rip’n’Twist lived up to its name when it suddenly reared as the horses were being led to the starting gate, throwing jockey Shannon Apthorpe on to the track.
Fortunately Apthorpe wasn’t injured and clambered back on board to eventually finish eighth but the incident delayed the start for about 15 minutes.
This was the only incident during the Autumn Meeting, which attracted a good crowd to the Lee Park track to soak up the sunshine.
Samios Hardware and Plumbing – the sponsors of Race 2 – had booked a large private marquee for their clients at one end of the course – and guests enjoyed the day in fully catered comfort.
A record field of 40 candidate entered the Ladies Fashions Of The Field competition and judges had to confer several times before choosing the ultimate winners.
Compere Cr Damien Tessmann said he was delighted to be surrounded by so many gorgeous ladies, and didn’t envy the judges their task.
Similar bumper fields entered the men’s and children’s competitions.
After completing her fashion duties, Magda went to the mounting yard to meet the jockeys, take part in a “Behind The Barriers” experience for the start of Race 5 and exchanging good-hearted banter and indulging in a bit of horseplay with leading South Burnett jockey Lyall Appo.
Race Club secretary Rosemary Hansen told southburnett.com.au the club was very happy with the turnout for the day.
The Race Club’s next meeting will be the annual Nanango Cup races in August.
