The 12th book published by Cherbourg’s Budburra Books was officially unveiled this week at a colourful (and tasty) launch at The Ration Shed.

“Budburra’s Garden” takes children on a journey through an edible garden, learning about colours and colourful foods along the way.

The idea is also to introduce young children (aged 3-5 years) to the healthy eating concept of “eating a rainbow every day”, ie eating foods of different colours.

The launch was a fun-filled event, attended by local schoolchildren and their parents, other community members and elders.

Many of the children had been involved in the art workshops which produced the illustrations for the book in co-operation with Cherbourg’s adult art group, the Yidding artists, who are long-term partners with Budburra Books.

Cherbourg elder Aunty Grace Bond compered the afternoon and  Aunty Ada Simpson read  from the book.

Budburra chairman Robert “Rocko” Langton sang the song that goes with it (available as a free download from the Budburra Books website).

Then it was time for the “Junior Murri Chef” competition.

Six teams of two children created one vegetable salad and one fruit salad each which were then presented to the guest judges: Sheree Strauss, from the Yurri Muntha Café, Jo Kemp from The Ration Shed, and Tarita Fisher from Cherbourg Community Health.

The dishes were judged on taste, presentation and creativity, and prizes were awarded.

All children at the launch received a free copy of the book, there were art activities guided by Robyn Langton and a “rainbow of food” was devoured.

The project was made possible by a donation from BP’s Reconciliation Action Plan and a partnership with The Smith Family.

Representatives from both BP and The Smith Family attended the launch and seemed impressed by the turnout and the community’s enthusiasm for the book.

Other partners during the development of the book were The Ration Shed, Cherbourg Community Health, Beverly Hand of www.mimburi.com.au, the Cherbourg Yidding artists, Ratartat Artists, and many community members and elders who contributed to the text and artwork.

This is Budburra’s 12th book, but it’s the first since the group has set up away from Cherbourg State School.
