Interviews began today at Nurunderi TAFE College at Cherbourg today to find 20 young would-be video journalists to take part in a unique training course.
One of the first people to express an interest in the course was Vincent Watson, 19, who is currently enrolled in the Literacy and Numeracy Program at the college.
The Cherbourg MoJo (“mobile journalist”) project will train young people to research, write, shoot, edit and upload short video films.
The program also has a serious side .. to help make literacy and numeracy training fun for people who need these basic skills to gain employment.
Vincent currently spends two days a week at TAFE but if he signs up to the MoJo project this will increase to full-time.
He’s ready to try something new to help improve his skills.
“I just want an education so I can join the army,” he said.
The short films that the MoJos will make can be on any subject that interests them: family, friends, culture, history …. even football.
The Cherbourg MoJo project will be run by Ivo Burum, CEO of Burum Media and a former executive producer at both Channel 9 and the ABC.
It is being funded through a Federal Government program. Participants must be aged 15-19.
