Better off behind bars? Clare Wootton (CROW-FM), Deputy Mayor Cr Keith Campbell and Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington beg for their bail money
The long arm of the law … Sgt Michael Eadie, from the South Burnett PCYC, collars Cr Keith Campbell

We don’t know how many laws were broken at Kingaroy Shoppingworld on Saturday morning … begging, pick-pocketing, attempted theft and even a spot of police brutality, but it was all in the name of a good cause.

The “Doing Time For Youth Crime” promotion saw several well-known South Burnett residents put in the slot until they raised sufficient bail money to get released.

This necessitated some frantic begging from behind bars, attempted theft (you know who you are, Cr Kathy Duff) and even the recruiting of young family members into the money-making racket (shades of Fagin …)

At one stage, Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell’s antics even required some calming  restraint from South Burnett PCYC manager Sgt Michael Eadie.

All the money raised from the event – at the last count it was over $2000 – will be used to provide activities by the South Burnett PCYC.

Cr Campbell was the top fund-raiser, handing over more than $1000. But he has nothing to boast about … this also included at least one “bribe” to keep him behind bars a bit longer.
