The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society is getting excited … the group is bringing the famous musical “Oliver!” to the South Burnett this year and they want to make it truly spectacular.
The society has begun recruiting children – lots of them – to take part in the August production.
Over the past couple of weekends the show’s children’s chorus has been having fun learning some dance steps and hearing some of the songs from the musical.
But the society wants even more children to join them.
“The commitment to performing in a musical is high and requires dedication from not only the children but their parents as well,” SBMC Director Jan Pritchard said.
“Ideally, children who take part in the chorus should be aged between 7 and 17. But older children are most welcome to be part of the adult chorus and we’d love to have them along, too.
“And if you’d like to join us for this wonderful production but don’t see yourself on stage, we’re always in need of assistance with costumes, sets, painting and backstage. So if you can assist with any of these, please feel free to come and talk to any of the members when rehearsals commence.”
“Oliver!” is based on the famous Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”, and follows the fortunes of a young boy from a workhouse as he makes his way through working-class London.
The show premiered in London’s West End in 1960, then became a successful Broadway production in 1963 before being turned into a Academy Award-winning musical film in 1968.
It’s best known for songs like “Food, Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself” and “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two”.
Rehearsals will be held at the Society’s shed at the rear of the South Burnett Enterprise Centre at 6 Cornish Street in Kingaroy every Sunday at 1:00pm from April 21.
Anyone who is interested in joining, young and not so young, should come along to the first rehearsal.
Once things get into full swing, the rehearsal starting time will shift to 11:00am each Sunday.
