Former Kingaroy student Shannon Nitschke, who completed her Year 12 at St Mary’s Catholic College in 2012, has been awarded a $6000 scholarship to assist her with tertiary studies.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship was presented to Shannon at a ceremony at the university on Monday.

The scholarship, which was presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hall, will be divided over three years, with $2000 supplied each year.

Students who began their undergraduate studies in 2013 were eligible to apply.

Shannon told southburnett.com.au she was “in shock” when she heard that she had been awarded the scholarship.

“It will be a great help,” she said.

Shannon will be studying occupational therapy at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The scholarship is based upon academic excellence and leadership skills demonstrated through academic, extra-curricular or community activities.

St Mary’s Principal Michael Nayler said these characteristics were certainly evident in Shannon, who had distinguished herself in her senior years.

“Her academic results, her diligence, and her whole-hearted involvement in all aspects of college life were outstanding.

“St Mary’s is pleased that the university has also recognised and encouraged these values,” Mr Nayler said.
