January 29, 2013
Saturday’s rain forced the Queensland Dairy and Heritage Museum team to shift their annual Australia Day event from the museum grounds to the Murgon PCYC … but it didn’t stop the celebrations.
Guest speaker was Queensland Rural Ambassador Ian McConnel, from ‘Mt Brisbane’ near Esk. Ian spoke about his family history, the 1830s in Queensland and how proud he felt to be an Australian.
Volunteers cooked up damper – served with the obligatory golden syrup – and enjoyed live music from the Stolzenberg Brothers and bush poetry read by Earl Pratt and Cynthia Hatchett.
Unfortunately, the PCYC hall was a bit too small for the planned thong throwing competition, so we’ll never know who the 2013 champion would have been.
However the winners of the annual Murgon Business and Development Association’s local Australia Day awards were announced:
- Senior Murgon Ambassador – Col Sippel
- Junior Murgon Ambassador – Sarah Jensen
- Senior Sportsperson – Nev Kratzmann
- Junior Sportsperson – Jared Sippel
- Arts and Culture – Susan Mollenhauer
- Community Event of the Year – Susan Dowdle Annual Dance Concert
- Outstanding Contribution to the Murgon Community – Lyn and Darryl Koy
Congratulating the Koys, Murgon businessman Leo Geraghty said the couple were involved as volunteers in many local activities including the Dairy Museum, Visitor Information Centre and Murgon Neighbourhood Watch. Lyn also does of the typing for the production of “Murgon Moments”.
South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann and local councillor Kathy Duff also congratulated Murgon residents who featured in the South Burnett Council’s Australia Day awards, which were announced the previous evening in Blackbutt.
They were Lifetime Achievement Award winner Leo Geraghty, Murgon Local Achiever Sylvia Hiltunen, Sportsperson of the Year Nev Kratzmann and Junior Sportsperson of the Year nominee Jared Sippel.
