A support group for people in the South Burnett region with Parkinson’s Disease, their families and carers will kick off on Monday (January 14).

The support group will be hosted at Orana Lutheran Complex’s new community hub in Kingaroy.

As well as the Parkinson’s group, Orana is now also hosting a Telehealth service, the South Burnett Police Citizens Youth over 50s Strong Healthy Active Body, and the RSL Veterans Drop-In Centre.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressively degenerative neurological disorder which affects the control of body movements.

Around 35 people will gather at the free monthly meeting — which is open to the public — to set out this year’s agenda, discuss guest speakers and enjoy morning tea.

South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group Joint Co-ordinator Maree Millard said Orana was the perfect venue for the group’s meetings and encouraged people to come along.

“We want to give people the emotional support they need and share ideas,” she said.

“We want to see it go on, grow and become a support mechanism for the community.

“We also like to be able to educate the community about Parkinson’s Disease and make them aware anyone can be struck down with it.

“It affects around 17,000 people in Queensland.

“There are probably people and residents at Orana with the disease and we can reach out to them as well.”

The support group’s future meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
