Kingaroy’s Holly Ferling and Nanango’s Holly Flanigan were named today as two of Queensland’s most exceptional students.
They were both winners in the annual RSL Youth Development Program, which has awarded over $500,000 worth of grants to 199 Queensland teenagers this year.
RSL (Queensland Branch) Chairman Terry Meehan said the winning students were the leaders of tomorrow.
“The RSL is excited to provide practical support to some of Queensland’s best and brightest young people,” he said.
“These grants of up to $5000 are a genuine boost for students who excel in areas such as maths, science, sport, dance and music. Some will be lending a hand with grassroots community projects in Australia and overseas.
“We are nurturing aspiring pilots, taekwondo champions, saxophonists and film makers to further their ambitions. The breadth and depth of these students’ goals are impressive and inspiring to all of us.”
Year 11 student Holly Ferling from Kingaroy State High School won a grant so she could continue to perform at an elite level in her chosen sports of cricket and netball.
Year 10 Nanango State High School student Holly Flanigan won a grant to help her complete Silver and Gold levels in the Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award.
Since 2007 the RSL Youth Development Program, in conjunction with Bond University, has provided more than $3 million to assist 1200 exceptional students throughout the State.
Winning students will attend a one-day leadership forum at Bond University on the Gold Coast in March and will be invited to apply for one of three annual ANZAC Scholarships, which cover 50 per cent of tuition fees for any single or combined degree at Bond University.
Applications for the next YDP grants open on 25 April and close on 11 November 2013. Application details can be found at www.RSLyouth.com.au
