General surgery is now available again at Kingaroy Hospital,  using doctors trained under a rural generalist program.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said today this was one of the achievements of the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service Board, three months into its new role.

“Mike Horan and his board are the best equipped people in the State to identify the needs of the Darling Downs community and they are planning and providing health services accordingly,” Mr Springborg said.

“The board has already achieved some great things in its first few months, including getting the $10.6 million Adolescent Mental Health Unit operating in August as well as the Community Health Centre in Cherbourg.

“The projects that the Darling Downs HHS has progressed will make a big difference to locals accessing health services.

“When boards are able to work collaboratively with other agencies, such as this one is doing with the Darling Downs-South West Medicare Local to reduce outpatient waiting lists, you know they are going in the right direction,” he said.
