The South Burnett Regional Council is blaming State environmental legislation for changes in operating hours at the Wondai and Murgon tips.
A spokesman said today both facilities now needed to be secured and staffed.
As well, the facilities have to be converted into transfer stations in order to increase recycling opportunities and reduce waste entering landfills.
This means that residents will no longer be going to the tip face or edge of the landfill trench to dispose of their waste – they will deposit it into a skip bin instead.
After public consultation, Council has decided on the following opening hours:
- Wondai Waste Facility (Wondai-Charlestown Road, Wondai)
Wednesday through to Monday: 8:00am–noon
Tuesday: Closed (also closed Good Friday and Christmas Day)
- Murgon Waste Facility (Borcherts Hill Road, Murgon)
Wednesday through to Monday: 1:00pm–5:00pm
Tuesday: Closed (also closed Good Friday and Christmas Day)
The changes will begin on October 17 and be reviewed after three months.
Residents will be able to use the transfer stations to dispose of:
- Domestic waste
- Commercial waste
- Cardboard/paper
- Green waste
- Waste oil
- Glass
- Tyres
- Scrap metal
Agricultural drums can still be recycled through the drumMUSTER program, but by appointment only.
There is a drumMUSTER compound at the Murgon Waste Facility, and the Wondai drumMUSTER compound is located at the Wondai Council Depot.
Asbestos, however, will need to be taken to the Kingaroy or Nanango Waste Facilities for disposal.
During this period Council has asked residents for feedback about the changes.
Comments should be sent to Council by email or by phoning (07) 4189-9302 (Wondai) or (07) 4189-9501 (Murgon).
