The 2012 Relay For Life “Celebrity Sports Dinner” at Wondai next week features three solid gold Australian sporting heroes: former Test fast bowler Jeff “Thommo” Thomson, former heavyweight boxing champion “Aussie” Joe Bugner, and Olympic gold-winning speed skater Steven Bradbury.
Bradbury, who is perhaps best known for his unlikely victory at the Salt Lake City Olympics when all his fellow competitors fell, has had an inspiring life, including competing in multiple Olympics and world championships, and recovering from serious injuries along the way including a broken neck.
Bugner has also had a remarkable life, fighting Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the age of 23, working in movies alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme, and becoming the oldest ever boxer to hold a world championship belt.
Thommo is also a household name. He played 51 Tests for Australia and took 200 wickets. His speed was clocked by radar at 160km/h but many believe he often achieved even greater speeds during competition.
The Celebrity Sports Dinner will be held at Wondai Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 8, from 6:00pm.
Cost is $75 per person or $700 for a table of 10. Tickets include a pre-dinner drink and canapes on arrival and a gourmet two-course seated dinner with tea/coffee.
A bar will be operating.
