Murgon’s Quota International club will be hosting the District finals of the organisation’s Student of the Year competition on Saturday (August 4).

Students from throughout Quota District 34 – Bundaberg, Caloundra, Coolum Beach, Gympie, Kingaroy, Maleny, Maryborough, Murgon and Nambour – will gather in Murgon to compete for a $2000 bursary.

The students have all won their own local club’s competition.

Preliminary judging will be held at Murgon State High School before the final Public Speaking competition and dinner at Murgon RSL.

Two South Burnett students will be competing in the event:

  • Kingaroy State High School Year 12 Student Amy Harch, who was recently named Kingaroy club’s Student of the Year.
  • Murgon State School captain Sarah Jensen, who won the Murgon club’s competition.

The students were interviewed on leadership and citizenship roles, current affairs, sportsmanship and cultural knowledge by independent judges before being assessed on prepared and impromptu speeches.

Kingaroy judges were music teacher Claire Nicholls, former Deputy Principal Ilma O’Farrell and Bernie Pegrem, a Toastmaster of 22 years’ experience. Murgon judges were Marilyn Huddlestone, Wayne Castle and Anthony Baldwin.
