And he’s off … top scorer for the South Burnett, Coby Sullivan, takes off for the line to notch up his second try against Sunshine Coast Gold in Game 5

June 11, 2012

A good crowd of enthusiastic supporters filled the stand at Murgon Sportsground on Saturday and Sunday to cheer on the South Burnett U15 squad taking part in the 47th Battalion Carnival.

The fans enjoyed some exciting football from the young players.

Although the South Burnett Eagles didn’t rack up any victories, they did take part in the highest scoring game of the 10-match carnival, securing a credible 22 points against Carnival runners-up Sunshine Coast Gold in Game 5.

They started this match with a rush, scoring 10 points in just eight minutes and taking the lead. With 11 minutes left in the half, Sunshine Coast Gold’s Dale Madden crossed the line to equalise at 10-all; but at half-time it was 28-10 in favour of SCG.  South Burnett scored twice in the second half, including a try to Jeff Vaughan almost on the full-time siren, but it wasn’t enough and at full-time it was 50-22.

Highest scorer for the South Burnett over the weekend was Coby Sullivan who enjoyed three tries across the carnival and kicked one goal. Jeff Vaughan scored twice (including one against eventual Carnival winner Bundaberg) and Ervin Fisher, once. Brodie Cortes kicked three conversions.

Bundaberg finished the Carnival on top of the ladder, undefeated with 20 points.
