It was an extra big Anzac Day in Murgon on Saturday … large crowds turned out for both the Dawn Service and the morning commemoration, and there were so many entries in the parade that the route had to be extended.
Historic military vehicles belonging to Windera collector John Kratzmann again led the parade, with several carrying war veterans catching a lift rather than marching.
Harvy Dascombe’s vintage cars also had more old soldiers on board.
To coincide with the Gallipoli Centenary commemoration, an “enlistment tent” was erected opposite the Australian Hotel, replicating the depots that sprung up all over Australia after World War I was declared.
Summoned by a whistle as the parade approached, out came four freshly minted recruits in World War I uniforms, ready to meet their fate … fortunately, they just had to join the march.
Murgon’s annual commemoration also included the official opening of the new “Lest We Forget” archway over the pathway leading to Murgon RSL Club.
As usual wreaths and poppies were placed on the monument, and a volley of shots was fired.
High school student Connie Shelton played the Last Post and Reveille.
