A man in his 40s has been flown to Nambour Hospital with serious leg injuries after a five-vehicle pile-up this afternoon blocked the Burnett Highway at Tansey.<\/p>\n

A police spokesman said the incident occurred about 4:30pm following a collision at the Planted Creek Road intersection.<\/p>\n

The injured man was trapped in his vehicle for more than 90 minutes before being freed by emergency crews.<\/p>\n

The highway was expected to re-open about 8:00pm.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 12:30am: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Initial police investigations indicate about 4:30pm a vehicle was waiting to turn on to Planted Creek Road from the Burnett Highway with a second vehicle waiting behind it.<\/p>\n

Another two vehicles were approaching in the same direction when one has collided with the rear of the second waiting vehicle.\u00a0 One of the vehicles speared off into the path of a fifth vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

A 43-year-old Gayndah man was airlifted to Nambour Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.<\/p>\n

A 28-year-old Mooloolaba man was taken to Murgon Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.<\/p>\n

A 43-year-old Kingscliff man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.<\/p>\n

The highway was closed for several hours and has since been reopened.<\/p>\n

An AGL Action Rescue Helicopter spokesman said the\u00a0multi-vehicle crash involved four cars and a minibus with eight people on board.<\/p>\n

A utility involved in the collision rolled, trapping a 43-year-old male driver for more than an hour.<\/p>\n

The helicopter’s doctor and flight paramedic treated the Gayndah man for multiple trauma injuries including a seriously fractured leg.<\/p>\n

He was airlifted to the Nambour General Hospital in a serious but stable condition.<\/p>\n
