The Kumbia Hotel is making a habit of attracting rugby league royalty to the South Burnett … last year it was the Walters brothers, on Saturday it was the turn of Allan “Alfie” Langer.<\/p>\n

Langer, another part of the Broncos’ famous “Ipswich Connection”, is one of the finest half-backs Queensland has produced.<\/p>\n

He captained the Broncos to their first premiership win in 1992, has won both the Clive Churchill and Rothmans medals and represented Australia in 25 games. He was a fixture in the Maroons’ State of Origin team during the 1980s-90s.<\/p>\n

In one remarkable year – 1998 – Langer captained the Broncos to take out the NRL Premiership, the Maroons to a State of Origin series victory and Australia to a Test series win against New Zealand.<\/p>\n

During his 12 years at the Broncos (1988-99 and his “comeback” year in 2002), Langer played 258 first grade games.<\/p>\n

The “little general” had plenty of tips to share with Kumbia schoolchildren at a mini-coaching clinic held at the State School oval on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The children were put through basic drills under Alfie’s watchful eye.<\/p>\n

After working with the kids, Langer turned his attention to entertaining their parents.<\/p>\n

The Kumbia Hotel was packed for the “pig-on-the-spit” dinner during which Langer shared a lifetime’s worth of rugby league anecdotes and posed for photos late into the night.<\/p>\n
