Usually the Blackbutt Show Society holds a cattle sale to raise funds … but this year they went crazy and invited local residents to splash about in a bog, stack hay bales, milk wooden cows and crack open tinnies.<\/p>\n

The 2015 Farmers’ Challenge was held at the Blackbutt Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon and attracted a large crowd eager to watch the fun and games.<\/p>\n

The “challenge” began with the Stockman’s Shootout, where team members shot at dingos, wild pigs, foxes and deer (not real, of course) while avoiding shooting at “cattle”, “horses” and “sheep”.<\/p>\n

Then it was on to the Cowcocky Milking, where a very wooden Buttercup was encouraged to give up her milk.<\/p>\n

This was followed by the Ringers Ride (chucking gumboots at targets while being towed around on a hay bale), riding the Buckaroo Mechanical Bull and collecting eggs while negotiating a maze of hazards including a tarpaulin covered in detergent.<\/p>\n

All this mayhem culminated in the massive “Plough The Field, Pull The Pig, Stack The Hay and Crack A Tinny” challenge.<\/p>\n

The top-scoring teams from the earlier rounds went straight into the Grand Final (and a chance to win $1000), but there was also a second chance round, the winner of which also earned a place in the final.<\/p>\n

This last challenge involved pulling a team member on a wooden sled, finding a plastic pig in muddy water, filling a bucket a cup at a time, stacking hay bales, and then downing a tinny.<\/p>\n

The Timbertown Cabinets team won the 2nd Chance round but weren’t good enough in the final, with the boys from the Silverwood Farming team coming our triumphant and taking home the $1000.<\/p>\n

As well as the games, other highlights on the day included post-ripping, cane toad racing and live music.<\/p>\n

Show Society canteen convenor Cheryl Marriott said she was very happy with the turnout for the day.<\/p>\n

She said all the proceeds would be going to the Show Society with the exception of money raised during the cane toad races which would be donated to a charity which supports Aussie farmers.<\/p>\n
