High pressure water blasting will begin soon on the D’Aguilar Highway to help improve the safety of the northern entrance into Yarraman.<\/p>\n

Officer-in-Charge of Yarraman Police, Sergeant Sean Relf, told the Yarraman Progress Association meeting on Tuesday that work would begin soon to roughen up the surface and he hoped this would fix the problem.<\/p>\n

Contractors have already inspected the road and marked out areas which need attention.<\/p>\n

The work follows an incident on January 21 when a B-double carrying fly ash lost traction on the wet bitumen and jack-knifed near the Yarraman Police Station.<\/p>\n

Senior-Constable Steve Crawford, from Yarraman Police, said today he expected the water blasting would begin within a week to a fortnight at the latest.

\nThis would remove grime and roughen the surface which should provide vehicles with more grip.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the meantime, the speed limit would remain at 40km\/h.<\/p>\n

The Transport and Main Roads Department has not yet decided whether the speed limit will be raised back to 60km\/h after the work is completed.<\/p>\n

Local residents have been pressing for a 50km\/h limit through town.<\/p>\n
