{"id":94973,"date":"2015-02-02T11:36:09","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T01:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=94973"},"modified":"2020-11-20T15:23:41","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T05:23:41","slug":"new-law-ticks-old-habit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/02\/02\/new-law-ticks-old-habit\/","title":{"rendered":"New Law Ticks Old Habit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hJaXE191nj4?rel=0\" width=\"740\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is now legal for motorbike riders to &#8220;lane filter&#8221;, ie drive between queued traffic, in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>The RACQ said new traffic laws take effect from today after a review by the Department of Transport and Main Roads last year.<\/p>\n<p>RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the changes would reduce confusion around the common practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany motorbike riders often work their way to the front of a queue to try and get away from heavy traffic quickly,\u201d Mr Spalding said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe are glad to see the law has caught up and has given riders and motorists more clarity on what is the right thing to do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr Spalding said &#8220;lane filtering&#8221; was only legal for experienced motorcyclists. Learners and provisional riders were prohibited from doing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLane filtering can be dangerous if you don\u2019t have a lot of on-road experience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to be able to manoeuvre through queued traffic slowly and safely, ensuring you don\u2019t go too close to other drivers and be alert for a driver switching lanes at the last minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor safety reasons, we wouldn\u2019t recommend you lane filter through narrow gaps or in traffic with large vehicles such as trucks and buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotorcyclists are vulnerable to a side-swipe so drivers need to take extra care by checking carefully for passing motorcycles before changing lanes.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More information is available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmr.qld.gov.au\/Safety\/Queensland-road-rules\/Motorcycle-road-rules.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transport and Main Roads website<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is now legal for motorbike riders to &#8220;lane filter&#8221;, ie drive between queued traffic, in Queensland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":94979,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,24],"tags":[1132,54],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
