Heavy smoke from a large grass fire on the Nanango-Tarong Road, south of the Allen Road intersection, forced the closure of the road this afternoon.<\/p>\n

An Emergency Services spokesman said 12 firetrucks from urban and rural brigades attended the blaze, which broke out about 1:15pm.<\/p>\n

The fire jumped the road about 2:30pm.<\/p>\n

There are residential properties located in the vicinity of the fire. Although it is believed no homes are currently under threat, residents in the area will be affected by smoke haze.<\/p>\n

Police have asked residents to be on high alert and await further instructions.<\/p>\n

A Fire Brigade spokesman said residents who suffer from or are susceptible to respiratory illness should remain indoors and keep their doors and windows shut. They should call Triple Zero immediately if they are concerned their property is under threat.<\/p>\n

Traffic is being diverted along Allen Road.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 11:00pm: <\/strong>The fire has been brought under control. Firefighters will remain on the scene overnight to monitor the area and watch for flare-ups.<\/p>\n

UPDATE August 27:<\/strong>\u00a0Multiple fire crews remain on scene. The fire is under control and is burning within containment lines. Firefighters will work today to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and to continue back-burning operations. Fire crews will patrol and monitor the fire throughout the day. There is no threat to property at this time.<\/p>\n
