January 21, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\nPolice are reminding motorists to take extra care ahead of the severe weather which has been forecast to affect large parts of Queensland over the next few days.<\/p>\n
Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said with many families returning home from holidays, police were urging extra vigilance.<\/p>\n
\u201cHeavy rainfall is expected and we\u2019re urging all drivers – particularly those travelling long distances – to be prepared, to exercise patience and to take great care with potentially flooded roads,\u201d Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe seem to say it every summer, but it is really important not to ignore road closure signs.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot only is it extremely dangerous, but you can receive an on-the-spot fine of $683 or even face criminal charges for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as well as running the risk of voiding insurance policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s bad enough putting yourself at risk through such reckless behaviour, but you\u2019re also endangering the lives of your passengers as well as police and other emergency services personnel who have to respond.<\/p>\n
\u201cRescuing stranded travellers puts considerable pressure on emergency services.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a very simple message to motorists contemplating taking the risk. If it\u2019s flooded, forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Severe weather safety tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Be flexible and be prepared to change your plans depending on the weather<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- Drive to conditions \u2013 this includes increasing your stopping distance and ensuring your headlights are on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- Never attempt to cross flooded roadways, creeks or rivers either in your vehicle or on foot<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- Never let your children play in flood waters \u2013 flood waters are dangerous, unpredictable and can cause illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- Tie down outside furniture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
