The traditional Christmas Eve Carnival at Wondai, organised by the local Show Society, was as popular as ever on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Crowds filled Coronation Park to await the drawing of the “Wondai Dollars” Christmas shopping promotion.<\/p>\n

This year, three “first” prizes of $1000 each were drawn, followed by 15 runners-up prizes of $200.<\/p>\n

Shoppers who purchased goods at participating stores went into the draw … but there was a catch, to be eligible for the $1000 prize they had to be able to get to the stage within 60 seconds of their name being called.<\/p>\n

This year all three winners made it in time: Linda Staines, David “Tarz” McCullough and Patsy Phipps, all from Wondai.<\/p>\n

The winners of the 15 smaller prizes didn’t have to be present, but many were at the Carnival anyway and collected their prizes.<\/p>\n

After the excitement of the draw, the two spinning wheels took over at either end of the park, with prizes ranging from novelty goods to hams to be won.<\/p>\n

The Wondai and District Town Band, playing from the balcony of the Hotel Cecil, added to the festive atmosphere as their music filled the park.<\/p>\n

But the Christmas highlight – much to the delight of the children – was the fact Santa managed to drop by for a short time on his busiest night of the year.<\/p>\n
