{"id":9157,"date":"2012-08-23T18:17:12","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T08:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=9157"},"modified":"2020-10-01T13:36:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T03:36:34","slug":"council-working-to-preserve-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/08\/23\/council-working-to-preserve-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Working To Preserve Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_9166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9166\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/heritage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9166\" title=\"Heritage Listing\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/heritage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/heritage.jpg 350w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/heritage-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/heritage-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visitor Information Centre volunteers Noel Barsby and Wayne Collier in the old 1938 Council Chambers in Kingaroy, which now houses an art gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>August 23, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council has been working with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to identify Council-owned sites which may be architecturally or socially significant to Queensland&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>The 1938 Kingaroy Council Chambers and the Murgon Civic Centre have been identified as significant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a testament to the communities of Kingaroy and Murgon how the two Council owned sites being considered for entry into the Queensland Heritage Register have been conserved,&#8221; Cr Deb Palmer, the Portfolio Chair for Community and Cultural Services, said.<\/p>\n<p>The 1938 Kingaroy Council Chambers located in Haly Street was built at an approximate cost of \u00a35000.<\/p>\n<p>Council believes this has proven to be well worth the investment for the community with the current use as part of one of the South Burnett\u2019s premier attractions: the Kingaroy Information, Art and Heritage Precinct.<\/p>\n<p>The Precinct incorporates an art gallery, museum, meeting rooms, woodcrafters workshop, interpretative arena, information service and retails a large range of local products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Murgon Civic Centre built in the 1930s at a cost of around \u00a310,500 incorporated a main auditorium, library, Returned Soldier\u2019s League room and four commercial shops, which demonstrated an innovative approach by the local government at the time to value-add to the facility and generate income on behalf of the community,&#8221; Cr Palmer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Civic Centre today still provides a valuable service to the community as the hall is regularly booked and the shops provide an economic benefit to the town of Murgon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The South Burnett Regional Council has invited interested members of the community to make submissions to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection relating to the Council-owned sites under consideration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Written submissions can be forwarded through to The Site Registrar, Heritage Branch, the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, GPO Box 2454, Brisbane, 4001.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related article: <a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/08\/five-sites-nominated-for-heritage-listing\/\">Five Sites Nominated For Heritage Listing<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Burnett Regional Council has been working with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to identify Council-owned sites which may be architecturally or socially significant to Queensland&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":9166,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3],"tags":[21,28],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
