{"id":90670,"date":"2014-12-01T23:09:08","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T13:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=90670"},"modified":"2020-11-20T17:54:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T07:54:35","slug":"termites-cant-stop-three-years-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/12\/01\/termites-cant-stop-three-years-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Termites Can&#8217;t Stop Three Years Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_90671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90671\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141201-robyn-dower1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-90671\" title=\"20141201 Kay Gorring and Robyn Dower\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141201-robyn-dower1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141201-robyn-dower1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141201-robyn-dower1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kay Gorring and Robyn Dower began assembling &#8220;A Sense Of Wonder&#8221; inside the Wondai Art Gallery on Monday after an agonising week-long wait to find out if the building was structurally sound<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>December 1, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tingoora artist Robyn Dower felt an overwhelming sense of relief today after enduring a nail-biting wait to find out if her new multimedia exhibition will open at the Wondai Art Gallery on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council officers were called in to inspect the Gallery&#8217;s structural integrity last week after termites were discovered in the building.<\/p>\n<p>They found the building was fundamentally sound &#8211; although they&#8217;ve told the Gallery&#8217;s volunteers to keep out of the store room area &#8211; and after making a few quick fixes, gave the go-ahead for Robyn&#8217;s exhibition to run in December and January as originally planned.<\/p>\n<p>But from February, the Gallery&#8217;s shows will relocate to the former Wondai Council Chambers for a few months while Council staff undertake remediation work to eliminate the termites and correct drainage problems that were also discovered during the inspection.<\/p>\n<p>Gallery curator Elaine Madill told <strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong> today she was relieved the long-planned summer exhibition would go ahead, and praised Council staff for their understanding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they found out Robyn&#8217;s exhibition has been purpose-built to fit into the Galley &#8211; and really couldn&#8217;t be run anywhere else &#8211; they were very accommodating about rescheduling repair works into early next year,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Robyn&#8217;s exhibition &#8220;A Sense Of Wonder&#8221; has been three years in the planning. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a collaborative venture with her sister Kay Gorring which combines art and literature in a way that&#8217;s never been seen in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s based on a heart-warming story, (see below), designed to raise guests&#8217; curiosity and delight the senses.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors who enter the Gallery for the next two months will find themselves in an entirely different building, packed full of papier mache animals, artworks and other elements taken directly from the &#8220;Sense Of Wonder&#8221; story to create a three-dimensional recreation of &#8220;Grandma Kate&#8217;s Cottage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like walking into a storybook,&#8221; Robyn said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And the only way to find out how the story ends is to visit the Gallery and explore the story in real life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This morning Robyn, Kay and their helpers began assembling their mammoth undertaking.<\/p>\n<p>They expect to be busy every day until Friday night&#8217;s opening putting the project together.<\/p>\n<p>But they promise visitors something unique &#8211; and an exhibition that will also be great family entertainment over the summer school holidays, too.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Sense Of Wonder&#8221; will open at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery at 6:00pm on Friday, December 5, and will remain on display daily from 10:00am to 4:00pm (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day) until Saturday, January 31. The exhibition recreates Grandma Kate&#8217;s cottage, and the conclusions of both stories will be found in the exhibition itself. If you intend to visit &#8220;A Sense Of Wonder&#8221; in the next two months, reading the two short stories below will help prepare you for what you&#8217;ll find:<br \/>\n<center><\/center><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">The Beginning Of &#8216;Wonder&#8217; &#8211; Grandma Kate&#8217;s Story<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS; font-size: xx-small;\">Out to the letterbox by the front gate,<br \/>\ntroubled and anxious, hurried Grandma Kate.<br \/>\nShe was waiting for news about Annabel.<br \/>\nWas her granddaughter really doing that well?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After reading the letter she held in her hand<br \/>\nKate decided she would have to devise a plan<br \/>\nto somehow convince an estranged Annabel<br \/>\nthat she needed to return and stay a spell.<\/p>\n<p>It was through her friends and their letters to Kate<br \/>\nthat kept her informed of her granddaughter\u2019s fate.<br \/>\nShe was successful now, had made quite a name<br \/>\nbut she still wasn\u2019t happy just the same.<\/p>\n<p>The letter showed that all was not well<br \/>\nand Kate grew worried for Annabel.<br \/>\nKate knew she wasn\u2019t in her rightful place<br \/>\nand time she came home to wonder\u2019s embrace.<\/p>\n<p>Kate\u2019s eyes drifted to the frame on her wall.<br \/>\nWould it have been different after all?<br \/>\nIf George hadn\u2019t been killed during the war<br \/>\nand was here for the granddaughter he never saw?<\/p>\n<p>Kate allowed her mind to stroll down memory lane<br \/>\nreflecting on happy times and times of great pain.<br \/>\nWhen she first met George and his whimsical heart<br \/>\nand the hours they spent sharing a passion for art.<\/p>\n<p>Their love of all creatures, elephant to mouse<br \/>\nand how they were going to fill up their house<br \/>\nwith quirky, fun pieces to make people think<br \/>\nlike the two fat chooks still perched on her sink.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d kept people wondering, often perplexed<br \/>\nas to what on earth they\u2019d be up to next.<br \/>\nMaybe a scruffy dog, maybe a cat,<br \/>\nmaybe a goldfish wearing a hat.<\/p>\n<p>Once George had placed a lump in their bed<br \/>\nbut when Kate asked, he only winked instead.<br \/>\n&#8220;That\u2019s Fred,&#8221; he said in his mischievous way<br \/>\n&#8220;and you\u2019ll have to guess before I\u2019ll say.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some thought them eccentric, just crazy fools,<br \/>\nothers, a rare gift like two precious jewels.<br \/>\nWhatever their reasons they all came to see<br \/>\nthe happy little house where wonder was free.<\/p>\n<p>When Edith was born they were over the moon<br \/>\nalthough there were rumours of war coming soon.<br \/>\nIt was a time of uncertainty, fear and fright<br \/>\nespecially when George was called up to fight.<\/p>\n<p>Promising not to end what they\u2019d just begun<br \/>\nthey vowed to keep always their keen sense of fun.<br \/>\nTo follow a simple life immersed in the arts<br \/>\nand enjoy all the wonder such a life imparts.<\/p>\n<p>When Kate learned George wasn\u2019t coming back<br \/>\nher colours seemed to drain to endless black<br \/>\nand that promise they had vowed to keep<br \/>\nspoke to her through her sadness deep.<\/p>\n<p>To pursue a dream they\u2019d had in their heart,<br \/>\na sense of wonder through the love of art<br \/>\nand Edith, their daughter, gave Kate the drive<br \/>\nto keep George\u2019s passion for art alive.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s whimsy or whether it\u2019s real,<br \/>\nit was art that helped their hearts to heal.<br \/>\nCreating together at every chance<br \/>\nmade their hearts sing, their spirits dance.<\/p>\n<p>They opened their home for all to share<br \/>\ninviting people from everywhere.<br \/>\nIts magic helped lots of sad hearts to mend<br \/>\nand many remained a lifelong friend.<\/p>\n<p>Edith grew up happy, talented and smart<br \/>\nand she moved to the city to study art.<br \/>\nShe hoped to open her own gallery one day<br \/>\nand continue that sense of wonder and play.<\/p>\n<p>She came back often to her mother Kate<br \/>\nbringing James when they started to date.<br \/>\nJames loved Edith and her fun way of life<br \/>\nand before very long he made her his wife.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019 upbringing was strict with no room for art<br \/>\nand he was never allowed to follow his heart.<br \/>\nFor he was creative, so gentle and shy<br \/>\nbut somehow a failure in his father\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n<p>So it was in with Kate they chose to move<br \/>\nalthough James\u2019 family did not approve<br \/>\nand despite his family not once coming round<br \/>\nJames was happy in the new life he\u2019d found.<\/p>\n<p>Edith put her studies on hold for awhile<br \/>\nwhen Annabel\u2019s birth gave them reasons to smile.<br \/>\nAnnabel was surrounded by their love and fun<br \/>\nbut the wonder faded having just begun.<\/p>\n<p>One night, driving home, Edith was killed<br \/>\nand James\u2019s love of life forever stilled.<br \/>\nNothing Kate did and nothing she said<br \/>\ncould convince poor James that Edith was dead.<\/p>\n<p>She was heartsick herself and very afraid<br \/>\nwhen James\u2019s family had decisions made.<br \/>\nThey took them back to the city to live.<br \/>\nJames needed more help than Kate could give.<\/p>\n<p>James tried very hard but he never did well<br \/>\nand his family were the ones raising Annabel.<br \/>\nKate missed Annabel but James needed her too<br \/>\nand James only did what he was told to do.<\/p>\n<p>Annabel visited with her Grandma Kate<br \/>\nup until around the age of eight.<br \/>\nThen James\u2019s family moved much further away<br \/>\nand she never came back anymore to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Kate wiped her tears. There was no time to dwell.<br \/>\nWould her plan work? Only time would tell.<br \/>\nShe enlisted her friends from far and near.<br \/>\nShe would need their help to get Annabel here.<\/p>\n<p>It was time she came home, her past to face<br \/>\nand allow herself back to her childhood place.<br \/>\nTo let go of hurt, frustration and pain<br \/>\nand learn to trust in wonder again.<\/p>\n<p>Kate\u2019s heart ached for her granddaughter dear<br \/>\nbut she knew that she just couldn\u2019t be here.<br \/>\nIt was Annabel\u2019s choice alone to make<br \/>\nand a risk that Kate just had to take&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">The Return To &#8216;Wonder&#8217; &#8211; Annabel&#8217;s Story<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS; font-size: xx-small;\">I agreed to housesit for my Grandma Kate<br \/>\nalthough I haven\u2019t seen her since I was eight<br \/>\nand if I\u2019m truly honest I must confess<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t really want to but still said yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d overheard the stories Dad\u2019s family had told<br \/>\nabout Grandma Kate and her eccentric household.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve a few faded memories of my childhood past<br \/>\nbut it\u2019s been fifteen years since I saw her last.<\/p>\n<p>If half those stories turned out to be true<br \/>\nit would be very different to the life I knew.<br \/>\nI felt curiously drawn but couldn\u2019t see how<br \/>\njust that Grandma Kate needed me now.<\/p>\n<p>I knew Grandma Kate was right into art<br \/>\nand like my late mother had a creative heart.<br \/>\nMy father was artistic and he used to draw<br \/>\nbut he doesn\u2019t allow art in our lives anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I packed up my things and left the city behind<br \/>\nwith a million thoughts crowding my mind.<br \/>\nMy life felt flat, so ordered and straight.<br \/>\nWould I find answers with Grandma Kate?<\/p>\n<p>My motives, it seemed, suddenly felt wrong<br \/>\nand I decided to tell her I wouldn\u2019t stay long<br \/>\nbut when I arrived there was only a note<br \/>\non which Grandma Kate had simply wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My home is yours, my Annabel dear.<br \/>\nThings have changed since you were here.<br \/>\nHere is the key but I cannot wait.<br \/>\nLove you always &#8211; Grandma Kate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So I heaved a sigh and swung open the door<br \/>\nand could hardly believe the things that I saw.<br \/>\nMy presence had no impact it seemed.<br \/>\nWas this real or something I dreamed?<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t why I\u2019d decided to come<br \/>\nand I started to wonder what I had done.<br \/>\nI put down my suitcase and slumped in a chair<br \/>\nas memories flooded in from everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Back to a time before I was eight<br \/>\nand lucky to live with Grandma Kate.<br \/>\nWhen things were simple and trouble free<br \/>\nWhen life was fun with Grandma and me.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the chooks on Grandma\u2019s sink<br \/>\nbut now there\u2019s a pig all pretty in pink.<br \/>\nThe cute little birdhouse on the kitchen shelf<br \/>\nthat Mrs bird wants all to herself.<\/p>\n<p>I got up from the table with eyes opened wide<br \/>\nand took another look at the wonder inside.<br \/>\nA goat standing there in a pair of bright shoes<br \/>\nand a duck at the fruit bowl trying to choose.<\/p>\n<p>A goose wearing a collar and holding a lead<br \/>\nannoying a rabbit that was trying to read.<br \/>\n&#8220;Come on,&#8221; I said, &#8220;let\u2019s go for a walk.<br \/>\nThe rabbit wants quiet and we must not talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can show me all the things I have to do<br \/>\nand introduce the others in this crazy zoo.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut the goose didn\u2019t budge, just stood his ground<br \/>\nand left it to me to look around.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled at the mouse asleep in a sock<br \/>\nwhen something moved in the old wall clock.<br \/>\nLaughing out loud and shaking my head<br \/>\nI remembered the words that Grandma said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now Annabel I\u2019ve told you a thousand times,<br \/>\nwe can\u2019t let those mice play in the chimes.<br \/>\nIf we don\u2019t chase them out we\u2019ll never be rid.&#8221;<br \/>\nWe would laugh and pretend but we never did.<\/p>\n<p>I had a vague recollection of the mysterious \u2018Fred\u2019<br \/>\nThat appeared to be just a lump in her bed<br \/>\nbut I don\u2019t recall Grandma ever telling me<br \/>\njust who or what that lump could be.<\/p>\n<p>That thing was moving I\u2019m willing to swear<br \/>\nand I\u2019ve no idea what it was under there.<br \/>\nThere seemed to be letters on Grandma\u2019s bed<br \/>\nbut I didn\u2019t go near them. Not near \u2018Fred\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The guineapigs, at least, didn\u2019t seem to care<br \/>\nas I backed up slowly and got out of there.<br \/>\nThey brushed their teeth and combed their hair<br \/>\nand took no notice of that lump in there.<\/p>\n<p>I found myself staring at the art on the wall<br \/>\nsome of it big and some quite small.<br \/>\nThere were drawings of my father\u2019s, exceedingly rare,<br \/>\nand paintings by my mother still hanging there.<\/p>\n<p>Artwork by Grandma and her many friends<br \/>\nfrom collage and sculptures to quirky bookends.<br \/>\nThe more I looked it seemed the more I saw<br \/>\nand it opened my heart to wonder once more.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s been three weeks since I came to stay<br \/>\nand my enchantment grows with each passing day.<br \/>\nI want to paint and sculpt and charcoal draw.<br \/>\nUse acrylics and pastels and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve returned to me my lost sense of play<br \/>\nthat\u2019s just as important as the everyday.<br \/>\nTo go and have fun, enjoy life and smile<br \/>\neven if it\u2019s only for a little while.<\/p>\n<p>Staying has set my imagination free<br \/>\nand somehow I feel this is meant to be.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t wait to tell her as my wonder grows<br \/>\nbut I suspect my grandma already knows&#8230;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tingoora artist Robyn Dower felt an overwhelming sense of relief today after enduring a nail-biting wait <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":90671,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[863,3],"tags":[23,26],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
