Cherbourg women will be given more sporting chances following Council winning a Get Out, Get Active grant.<\/p>\n

Netball will become part of Cherbourg’s sporting itinerary which currently includes indoor cricket, basketball and Friday night youth events.<\/p>\n

Daily after-school activities can host up to 100 children but it was believed more could be done to involve women and girls.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council applied for a grant and was awarded more than $15,000 to employ a co-ordinator and buy equipment.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hoped a social netball competition will evolve and then expand to have Cherbourg teams compete against other towns.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in the planning stages and hope to kick off the new program early next year,\u201d Cherbourg Council community services manager Edwina Stewart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to start small and grow big. We want maximum participation across the Cherbourg community.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms Stewart said the grant came from the State Government\u2019s Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will bring obvious health benefits to the town in the form of physical, social and emotional well-being,\u201d Ms Stewart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNetball is a great way for people to find their 30 minutes of exercise a day and it\u2019s a win for Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never had a drive for sports and recreation in Cherbourg before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hoping this will be the first of many grant wins so we can build a stronger, healthier and happier community.\u201d<\/p>\n
