Marcus Priaulx, <\/strong>from the Barambah PaCE<\/a> <\/strong>project, has put together a wrap-up of the 2014 school year after talking to some South Burnett primary school principals:<\/p>\n

Wondai’s Work Gets Great Results<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Wondai P-9 students have greatly improved their attendance, learning outcomes and behaviour over 2014.<\/p>\n

Principal Ruth Miller keeps a close eye on statistics which show about half her students have an attendance rate of 95 per cent or greater.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely shows in the results,\u201d Ruth said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of kids with this attendance level have excellent results.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose that attend for 90 per cent of the days have made significant improvements and those that have come for 95 per cent or more of the time have made even greater improvements.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows turning up to school every day is the key to children achieving with their learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth said the numbers of children showing up every day had grown over the years due to Wondai teachers involving them more with their learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children have warm-ups to get them into the lesson; it could be chanting number facts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt leads children to success in the first five minutes. Then there\u2019s plenty of lively interaction; to-and-fro between the children and teachers so nobody gets bored.”<\/p>\n

School\u2019s all about making friends … hanging out at Cherbourg State School were Edna Fisher, Jacody Saltner-Weazel, Latrell Leedie and Steven Walsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Cherbourg Provides Life-Changing Gift<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Cherbourg State School principal Peter Sansby says his time at the school has been the most rewarding of his 25 years in education.<\/p>\n

Peter believes the school has made great changes for the better due to the dedication of staff, students, parents, carers and the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation has the power to change lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation provides individuals with endless opportunities. Education is power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter says the school\u2019s future is\u00a0 \u201cextremely bright\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI invite every person to join the journey to ensure Cherbourg State School is seen as a school of excellence and a place where children are provided with the life-changing gift of a first class education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making new friends at Moffatdale State School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Mighty Year At Moffatdale
\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Moffatdale State School’s classroom attendance has grown along with the confidence of students.<\/p>\n

School attendance for the whole year was 91.7 per cent, but rose to 93.3 per cent – greater than the national average – during the final term.<\/p>\n

Principal Aaron Jones believes rewarding good behaviour during award ceremonies and having focussed-based programs in the areas of literacy, reading and spelling were the reason for the lift.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s given them a lot of confidence to keep going,\u201d Aaron said<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children are ability grouped so learn at their own level.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Aaron\u2019s first year at the school and second as a principal after he previously served at Condamine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a big difference,\u201d Aaron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoffatdale\u2019s very multicultural and it\u2019s very inclusive.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is treated the same; equally.\u00a0 There\u2019s a very positive vibe. It\u2019s friendly, inviting, the parents are very supportive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact we\u2019re outside Murgon means parents are making the effort to bring their children to us.\u00a0 That shows they\u2019re committed to improving their children\u2019s education.\u201d<\/p>\n

St Joseph’s principal Greg Cran is proud of his students and their learning results<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

St Joey’s Hops To The Top<\/strong><\/h3>\n

St Joseph’ s Catholic primary school at Murgon has a growing number of children who have hardly missed a day in class.<\/p>\n

The students have improved their learning outcomes by going to school every day this year … many students are in class, on or above the national average for all children.<\/p>\n

Principal Greg Cran said the result was better education results.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiteracy has been a big focus; reading, writing, sight words, from Prep to Year 2 this year, and next year it will be for the whole school,\u201d Greg said.<\/p>\n

Greg said the school\u2019s Year 6 and 7 leadership groups had been outstanding with their organising discos, fun games and gardening working bees, to name a few events.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese guys have set a good example from which the rest of our students can build upon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sets a platform for great results in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Isaiah Mi-Mi, Cyril Bligh and Chris Janz put finishing touches to a woodwork project at St Mary’s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

St Mary\u2019s Achieves Results<\/strong><\/h3>\n

St Mary\u2019s South Burnett Catholic College students get involved in everything.<\/p>\n

They act in school performances, play sport and music, win academic prizes and Benedictine Awards for showing the values of respect, responsibility, safe behaviour and being the best person they can be.<\/p>\n

The school had 47 Indigenous students from Pre-Prep to Year 12 this year and principal Mike Nayler said their attendance rates very much matched the non-Indigenous students.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur kids are achieving,\u201d Mike said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re doing amazing and going on to do all the things they want to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur parents are amazing and we\u2019re seeing the results of that with their children going on to university, traineeships and work.\u201d<\/p>\n

School is about forming partnerships … in the classroom, and across the community<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Murgon Partnerships Bring Success<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Murgon State School\u2019s musical “Cinderella \u2013 A Modern Fairytale” showed how the school community teamed together to create success.<\/p>\n

It was choreographed by the Year 6 and 7 students and contained a cross-section of children, staff, parents and citizens working together to put on a sensational show.<\/p>\n

The school also catered for children who found school tricky by having them create a “Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden” where they cooked healthy food and cooked it.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s parent group and footy teams were further demonstration of how great things happen when everyone works together.<\/p>\n

Student behaviour and attendance has improved and principal Pamela O\u2019Loughlin said the school was full of great teachers and learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey work very hard and the children really respond,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re also proud of our school-community relationships and the support we have from our parents.<\/p>\n
