{"id":88114,"date":"2014-11-15T01:06:19","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T15:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=88114"},"modified":"2020-11-23T11:37:33","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T01:37:33","slug":"kumbia-kids-learn-about-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/11\/15\/kumbia-kids-learn-about-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Kumbia Kids Learn About Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_88123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88123\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141114morcombes3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-88123\" title=\"20141114 Morcombes Visit To Kumbia SS\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141114morcombes3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141114morcombes3.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141114morcombes3-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Child safety educators Bruce and Denise Morcombe shake hands with Kumbia State School captains Ben Cleland and Chloe Barbeler during their visit to the school on Friday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 15, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students from Kumbia and Wooroolin State Schools learned the importance of three simple words on Friday: Recognise, React and Report.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce and Denise Morcombe &#8211; parents of murdered Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe &#8211; made a special presentation at Kumbia State School.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recognise, React and Report &#8230; these words could save your life,&#8221; the couple told students.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce and Denise, who now head the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielmorcombe.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Daniel Morcombe Foundation<\/b><\/a>, were appointed Child Safety Ambassadors for Queensland in September 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, they&#8217;ve delivered presentations to 87,000 students at more 250 Queensland schools and addressed a further 5000 students at more than 20 schools interstate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Their safety message is simple:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recognise<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;If you think something is wrong, it probably is&#8221;. Listen to &#8220;body clues&#8221;, the ways that your body alerts you to danger, ie goosebumps, butterflies in the tummy, sweating, shaking. &#8220;Recognise that your body clues are telling you that something is not right.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>React<\/strong> &#8211; Remove yourself from the danger. Run to a safe place; and then &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Report<\/strong> &#8211; Tell what has happened to someone from your safety network of adults, or to someone in uniform such as police officer. &#8220;If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, face-to-face or online, report it to an adult&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The couple reassured students that most people are good and didn&#8217;t want to hurt them, but there were potential dangers out in the world and it paid to be cautious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t think every car driver in the street is an abductor but use your instincts,&#8221; Denise said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some other suggestions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carefully go through your friends list on Facebook and other social media and delete everyone you don&#8217;t know<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Check all your privacy settings on Facebook so only your friends and family can see what you post<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t take the &#8220;risky&#8221; way home along a dark path or across an isolated field just to save a few minutes; stay near houses and shops, where people are out and about<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If possible, always travel with a friend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Plan ahead &#8211; select a &#8220;meeting spot&#8221; in case you become separated from your parents at an event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If a car driver asks for directions, call out the answer, never approach the car; if they open the door, run to a safe place<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Never get into a car with someone who is not authorised to collect you, even if you know them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Organise a &#8220;family password&#8221;.
