{"id":88105,"date":"2014-11-14T19:37:20","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T09:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=88105"},"modified":"2020-08-24T13:04:37","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T03:04:37","slug":"stay-cool-stay-healthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/11\/14\/stay-cool-stay-healthy\/","title":{"rendered":"Stay Cool, Stay Healthy"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_40548\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40548\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/jeanette-young-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40548 \" title=\"Dr Jeannette Young\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/jeanette-young-200.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Jeannette Young\" width=\"200\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/jeanette-young-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/jeanette-young-200-188x300.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 14, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 40 degree temperatures predicted for this weekend, Queensland Health is urging everyone to take suitable precautions to keep cool and healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland Health Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said it was important people stayed hydrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeat-related illness occurs when the body overheats and cannot cool itself down,\u201d Dr Young said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effects of overheating on the body can vary from heat rash and cramps through to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every year about 400 Queenslanders are treated at Queensland Health emergency departments for heat-related illness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Young said a number of measures could be taken to prevent heat-related illnesses, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink plenty of fluids &#8211; cool water is best. Don\u2019t wait until you are thirsty to drink but drink regularly throughout the day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Urine colour is a good guide to hydration &#8211; it should be clear to light straw-coloured, not dark or gold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay indoors in very hot weather, preferably in an air-conditioned building or ensure there is good air flow with fans and open windows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Public venues, such as air-conditioned shopping centres and pools, can provide refuge from the heat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>People can also stay cool by taking cool showers or baths, soaking their feet in a basin of water, or wetting a bandana or washer and wrapping it around their neck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Take time to adjust to the environment, pace yourself and limit strenuous outdoor activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dr Young said certain groups of people were more prone to heat-related illnesses including the elderly, infants, overweight and obese people, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with some pre-existing health conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonitor family, friends and even neighbours who may be more prone to heat-related illness\u2014check on them and make sure they are okay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said everyone should be aware of what to do when people had heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeat exhaustion usually develops over a couple of days,\u2019\u2019 Dr Young said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSymptoms may include muscle cramps, heavy sweating, paleness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting and fainting.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She said heat stroke was the most serious heat-related illness and had the potential to be life threatening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSymptoms of heat stroke are similar to heat exhaustion but the person may also have an extremely high body temperature; red, hot, dry skin, but possibly some clamminess; a rapid pulse; headache and confusion,&#8221; she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCool the person down urgently with a cool shower, bath or sponge, or even spray them with cool water from a hose. Loosen their clothing and have them rest in a cool place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProvide cool non-alcoholic fluids, but only if you are confident they can swallow. Avoid drinks high in sugar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf heat stroke is suspected, then the person will need urgent medical attention.
