{"id":87069,"date":"2014-11-05T23:58:30","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T13:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=87069"},"modified":"2020-11-23T12:26:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T02:26:50","slug":"thinking-pink-to-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/11\/05\/thinking-pink-to-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking Pink To Save Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_87073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87073\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141105cancer3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-87073\" title=\"20141105 Pink Ribbon Day\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141105cancer3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141105cancer3.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141105cancer3-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aunty Grace Bond won the &#8220;Deadliest&#8221; category in the decorated bra competition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 5, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The old Boys Dormitory at Cherbourg became a sea of pink on Wednesday for the Deadly Pink Ribbon Luncheon &#8230; a breast cancer awareness event which was tinged with sadness but also filled with laughter.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer survivors and their families gathered together, and candles were lit in memory of people who have died.<\/p>\n<p>The lunch was the culmination of the &#8220;bizarre bra event&#8221; which has seen members of the Many Threads group decorating bras and hanging bras along the fence to Murgon.<\/p>\n<p>There was even the cutting of a \u00a0&#8220;breast cake&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Guest speakers &#8211; including \u00a0Cr Christine Stewart and breast care nurse Sue Cox &#8211; shared information about how to reduce the risk of getting cancer and emphasised the importance of regular pap smears and mammograms.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight was the announcement of the winners of the decorated bra competition.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the bras &#8211; which have been lovingly worked on for weeks &#8211; were dedicated to the memory of family members and friends who have died of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The three judges &#8211; Cr Kathy Duff, Aunty Ada Simpson and Cherbourg Health Service manager Tarita Fisher &#8211; said they were looking for uplifting messages, creativity, inspiration, originality as well as the details of the actual sewing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The winners were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 1 &#8211; Deadliest<\/strong> &#8211; Grace Bond, runners-up Gloria Benson and Makayla Palm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 2 &#8211; Most Bizarre<\/strong> &#8211; Grace Bond, runner-up Sandra Morgan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 3 &#8211; Under 18<\/strong> &#8211; Landon Law-Palm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 4 &#8211; Novelty<\/strong> &#8211; Myra Duncan, runner-up Alana Purcell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 5 &#8211; Sexiest<\/strong> &#8211; Alana Purcell, runner-up Gloria Benson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 6 &#8211; Sporting<\/strong> &#8211; Gloria Bell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 7 &#8211; Most Inspirational<\/strong> &#8211; Makayla Palm, runner-up Nikita Palm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 8 &#8211; Road To Recovery<\/strong> &#8211; Cheryl Cooper , runner-up Alana Purcell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 9 &#8211; Golden Oldies<\/strong> &#8211; Sandra Morgan, runner-up Gloria Benson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 10 &#8211; Prettiest Pink<\/strong> &#8211; Grace Bond, runners-up Shirley Law and Gloria Benson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 11 &#8211; Most Creative<\/strong> &#8211; Gloria Benson, runners-up Shenane Law and Cheryl Cooper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Category 12 &#8211; Most Humorous<\/strong> &#8211; Gloria Bell, runner-up Alana Purcell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bras will be on display at The Ration Shed for the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a &#8220;People&#8217;s Choice&#8221; prize awarded from public votes. &#8230; Maureen was a Project Officer with the Women&#8217;s Cancer Screening Services in Brisbane and was presented with the Queensland Health Outstanding Achievement Award in 2013 for her long-term commitment to the prevention and advanced detection of women&#8217;s cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women; Grace Bond, Tash Bond and Aunty Kathy Brown read a tribute to Maureen before a memorial candle was lit in her memory and for other women who have died of cancer\u00a0\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87070\"
