Students from St John’s Lutheran School have been participating in a new sport during PE lessons recently.<\/p>\n

Year 6 and 7 have been receiving archery lessons for the past six weeks and learning about the joys and disappointments of trying to hit a target!<\/p>\n

Initially they worked through an “Archery \u2013 Come and Try” program for two weeks.<\/p>\n

This involved learning about safety procedures, bow and arrow terminology and how to safely use an archery range.<\/p>\n

They then participated in 45 minute lessons each week using compound, recurve and long bows.<\/p>\n

The St John\u2019s P&F purchased some of the equipment used in the new program including a variety of bows.<\/p>\n

Many students were surprised how difficult the sport is, especially after watching the Olympic athletes on TV who make it look so effortless.<\/p>\n

PE teacher Mr Greame Moseling, who organised the activity, \u00a0said this was the first time archery had been offered at St John’s.<\/p>\n

“It has been great to watch the children’s confidence grow as they participate each week,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We spent a lot of time initially learning about the specific names for the equipment and learning all the safety rules.<\/p>\n

“One main point the students learned was that patience and perseverance can assist on the sporting field, not just strength and who is the quickest.”<\/p>\n

The students enjoyed a mini-tournament at the conclusion of the course, where each student competed for accuracy by firing 18 arrows over three rounds.<\/p>\n

The teachers giving the instruction, Mr Jon Kotzur and Mr Graeme Moseling, are both keen archers and enjoyed the experience as well.<\/p>\n

They are looking forward to doing it again in following years as part of the PE curriculum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
