St Joseph\u2019s primary school Year 7 student Heather Sandow liked the look of this book, which was displayed at the school’s recent bi-annual Book Fair<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You may have loads of money, tons of gold and be richer than I’ll ever be
\nBut what I have is greater – it\u2019s a mother who reads to me<\/em><\/p>\n

There are many sayings about the power of reading, and St Joseph\u2019s Primary School in Murgon ensures its students benefit by holding a Book Fair twice each year.<\/p>\n

Last week three crates of books arrived at the school’s doors.<\/p>\n

Children got to browse through them in the library and take a wish list home for parents and carers to consider buying.<\/p>\n

School library assistant Nell Guteridge said there weren’t any bookshops in Murgon so the children always became excited.<\/p>\n

“Their faces light up as soon as you mention the Book Fair,” she said.<\/p>\n

Nell believes reading is central to every child having a brighter future.<\/p>\n

“If you can’t read you’re going to struggle,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s the basis for every subject and essential for a great future.”<\/p>\n

As Mary Ellen Chase once said:<\/p>\n

“When you learn to read you will be born again and never quite so alone”<\/em><\/p>\n

And as Rumer Godden once observed:<\/p>\n

“There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.”<\/em><\/p>\n
