{"id":80492,"date":"2014-09-07T22:53:08","date_gmt":"2014-09-07T12:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=80492"},"modified":"2020-11-27T11:30:55","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T01:30:55","slug":"bugle-calls-echo-historic-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/09\/07\/bugle-calls-echo-historic-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"Bugle Calls Echo Historic Battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_80493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80493\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140906bugle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-80493\" title=\"20140906 Beersheba Bugle\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140906bugle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140906bugle.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140906bugle-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Phillips and broadcaster\u00a0Bob Hargreaves with the historic Beersheba bugle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 8, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An echo from Australia&#8217;s World War I campaign in the Middle East sounded in Yarraman on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Kingaroy State High School instrumental music teacher Matt Phillips was invited to play the historic &#8220;Beersheba bugle&#8221;, part of the large display of militaria at Heritage House.<\/p>\n<p>Matt&#8217;s versions of the Last Post, Reveille (Rouse) and the Charge were recorded by veteran broadcaster Bob Hargreaves for Radio For The Print Handicapped (RPH), a national radio network aimed at people with a print disability.<\/p>\n<p>Bob will also be sending copies to the Australian War Memorial for their archives.<\/p>\n<p>The bugle was presented to the Yarraman Historical Society in June 2005 by Moore businessman Peter Dowdall.<\/p>\n<p>It is inscribed &#8220;Australian Light Horse Charge At Beersheba, October 31, 1917&#8221; and is believed to have been sounded during this historic battle which is remembered as the world&#8217;s last great cavalry charge.<\/p>\n<p>Matt said playing the army bugle was &#8220;challenging&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was a &#8220;rough military piece&#8221; rather than the more modern instruments he was used to playing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an old instrument but is actually in very good condition,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The challenge for me is to make it sound right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bob said he would be using the recordings during a special he was preparing for Radio RPH to mark the anniversary of the Australian Light Charge in October.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>According to the Australian War Memorial website:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Beersheba was a heavily fortified town 43km from the Turkish bastion of Gaza. It anchored the right end of a defensive line that stretched from Gaza on the Mediterranean coast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The first two frontal attackes on Gaza, in March and April 1917, failed. The British Army re-organised before trying again. The capture of Beersheba would break the Gaza\u2014Beersheba line and enable the British, Australian and New Zealand forces to outflank Gaza.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The British 20 Corps launched an attack on Beersheba at dawn on October 31, 1917.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>By late afternoon the corps had made little headway toward the town and its vital wells. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Lieutenant General Sir Harry Chauvel, commanding the Desert Mounted Corps, ordered the 4th Light Horse Brigade forward to attempt to secure the position.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Brigadier General William Grant responded by ordering light horsemen of the 4th and 12th Regiments to charge at the unwired Turkish trenches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The light horsemen did not carry swords or lances, so they held their bayonets in their hands and used them as &#8220;swords&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The momentum of the surprise attack carried them through the Turkish defences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The light horsemen took less than an hour to overrun the Turkish trenches and enter Beersheba.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Thirty-eight Turkish and German officers and about 700 other ranks were taken prisoner, and a supply of water was secured.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Australians suffered 67 casualties. Two officers and 29 other ranks were killed, and eigtht officers and 28 other ranks wounded.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The fall of Beersheba opened the way to outflank the Gaza-Beersheba Line.
