The 21st annual Kumbia Brain Drain was an intergalactic hit on Saturday night with teams raising an incredible $13,000 for the Kumbia State School P&C.<\/p>\n

Teresa Francis, from the organising committee, said the trivia night had been the “best ever”.<\/p>\n

The Kumbia Memorial Hall was packed with aliens of all sizes, shapes and colours.<\/p>\n

The theme was “21st Space Oddity” which explained the odd assortment of 240 creatures huddled at the various team tables.<\/p>\n

Winner of the Best Dressed team was the Martian-a-tors (with local MP Deb Frecklington aboard) with the Lunar-tics runners-up.<\/p>\n

The 2014 event always looked certain to be a success with half of the 40 tables booked before last year’s event was fully wrapped up.<\/p>\n

Sponsorship was also strong for the raffle prizes and auction gifts with support coming from all over Australia.<\/p>\n

“We have been very, very lucky,” Teresa said.<\/p>\n

Support also came in the form of P&C member Peter Howlett, who built the spaceship photography set and the Tardis main console which was manned by quizmaster and compere Dr Who (Damien) Martoo.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy artist Cherry Carroll also did a special pastel portrait of Dr Who.<\/p>\n

Next year’s Brain Drain should have a whole new feel with several committee members bowing out as their children will be leaving Kumbia State School.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Discussions are already starting on a theme …<\/p>\n

Teresa has been involved in the last four events and said it had been an “absolute honour” to work with the other committee members.<\/p>\n

She said the event had evolved over the past 21 years and she was sure it would continue to evolve in new directions in the future.<\/p>\n

Another key member bowing out after this year’s event is treasurer Jodi Northcott who also had a very important role (possibly even more important than doing the banking) … she wrote all the trivia questions.<\/p>\n

“There’s a few positions to fill, but we’re all replaceable,” Teresa joked.<\/p>\n

Money raised from this year’s event will be put towards classroom resources and a special play fort which is designed to help develop children’s motor skills.<\/p>\n
